Question 1986 Camaro 305???

I've got a buddy that just bought a 86 Camaro w/305. Overall he got it for a good deal, but there are some issues. Yesterday he blew a fuse when he tried to use his lighter, he pressed it in and it started smoking, then he lost his lighter, radio and dome light. His idle is pretty high, and he's running pretty rich (made me a little light headed) and when he cutts off the car it diesels. I've got a wealth of knowledge when it comes to 98+ camaros and LSX engines...but I know nothing about 3rd gens.

Where can I get info for getting his ride up to par, and then doing performance add on's in the future. I usually can find anything I need on LS1tech, but it hasn't been much help with this Camaro.

Thanks!

TFord Throw me an Email with the vin & I can break it down for ya & tell ya what the car suppose to have it in & what chances it is.

& the RPO codes, They should be either in the center consol or in the hidden packet under the hatch, drivers side. You will see where the key unlocks it.

86 its most likely carbed or could be TBI

I used to have an 86 Z28 TPI. My cigarette lighter did the same thing. All I did was replace the lighter was that fixed it. Wish you luck

No Iroc's didnt just have 350s, Because the 350 wasnt produced in the Fbody until 87. even after then they were allowed to have 305s in them, they were just the higher horse power 305

correct. they finally decided they needed some extra "umph", so they made another trim/engine level. they still made both 305s and 350s in the irocs

Take it to a garage, pull out your wallet and pay the man.

That is how the world works.

The cigarette lighter is on a circuit that is probably connected to the dome light and several other components in that particular vehicle.

You can buy a shop manual at any GM parts counter for that vehicle or you can buy a Motor Auto Repair Manual or you can buy a Chiltons.

Either way, unless you have a working knowledge of automotive electrical systems, chances are it is not going to help you.

Because of the age of the car, and because the car has most definitely been altered and because the car has probably had many owners in it's lifetime, it is safe to bet that something has been cut, wired wrong or is wore out.

The electrical system, which was made at that time by Packard Electric, Warren Ohio, was not very good when it was new and has not improved in the last 20 years of use, so problems like that were common place - even when it was new.

I know, I worked for a GM dealership back then and we saw those conditions all the time.
