M6 Shifter side-slop???

Hey all, first timer...

Anyone had issues with excessive side-to-side sloppiness in ther M6 shifter?? I thought the stock shifter felt bad from the get go, as someone mentioned on here, the throws were so long they felt like they were 'rowing a boat'. Anyway, I put in a Hurst Billet+2 a few months ago, and noticed that while the forward-back action is crisp, there's a lot of play sideways in any gear. I brought it to the dealer Monday & their responses were 1. Well, we can't warranty it cuz of the AM shifter, and 2. that the play was "normal' (GRRR!). Bringing it to another dealer FRI afternoon for a 2nd opinion....

One note: Last night just to confirm what I already knew, I disconnected the shifter shaft from the transmission end & wiggled the shaft going directly into the tranny & that's exactly where the play is.

Any similar issues out there & how much grief did YOU get???

Mousemotor... did you notice it before or are you like me & thought it was all-around sluggish & hoped the Hurst would solve everything?

Does the MGW have a more positive feel?
This stock shifter sucks, it's the only car I have ever missed a shift in....damn embarrassing!

The MGW shifter is the best shifter I have ever owned. It is smooth, positive and precise. I have never missed a shift.

I have "side-slop" even after I installed my Barton shifter. It's not Barton's fault, though. Barton has great shifter feel, very precise. It's the linkages. You'd have to get a complete system with the linkages to remedy side slop. (Such as the MGW as mentioned above.)

Yup, mine's pretty sloppy as well. I've missed 3rd a few times as well between the slop and extremely hard (in my opinion) 2-3 shift while at full throttle..

When I took mine to the dealer last time I was in a rush and when i mentioned it, they said it was "normal" for the M6. Next time I take it in I'll have to get with my salesman and take a new LS3 for a test drive to compare decide if my trans has issues or if it's my imagination.

One of the first mods I was going to do was an aftermarket shifter, but I'm waiting until I'm sure the sloppiness is "normal" and seeing if my hard 2-3 shift is "normal" as well.

The MGW is the bomb...

Crisp, and absolutely you know where the shifter is going when you jam a gear...

Okay, for all the MGW fans above... I'll clarify again...

the slop is at the TRANSMISSION shaft link (ie, the rod that enters the tranny).

No matter what shifter is on the end where you grab it, if the other end is loose, it'll feel like SH**.

My question remains the same. Has anyone dealt with this slop at the trans end of the linkage issue???

The springs in the mgw eliminate the side slop you are talking about.

I'm old school and the Hurst feels exactly like it should. You should have and a quiet & vibration kit in the box, put it on and it should solve your problems.

I like the stock shifter as well. I drove a camaro with a hurst shifter, and could not tell what gear I was in and it felt loose and wobbly even when it was in gear.

I'm putting serious thought into this shifter (the play is silly but I haven't had problems with it)... I imagine Steven is correct though that it'll void the warranty. Can anyone confirm whether or not that's the case? I want to know if someone has done this and directly spoke to GM service techs and gotten the word.

I'm also curious about the purchasing of the shifter. I want to do the black RS knob and shift kit, but I have to wonder if a dealer or repair shop could get a better price than an average Joe hitting up their website. Have people founds ways of reducing that price?

Does the MGW void the drive train warranty? That's a pretty important question...

I think the stock shifter is fine. There is always going to be a little slop in any gearshift, but then again, I have never driven a race car either.

ITS NOT the shifter!. Its the tranny linkage thats sloppy from the factory. And this is not a thread about promoting MGW, Hurst or anyone else.

that would be up to the dealership. Technically no, but if they want to they can and then you have to fight it out in court to prove your case and that will take lots of $$
