Great read, it's amazing to think that with $32,000, and some money to tune out your governor, you can get to 174.4 mph!

I intend to make a 'pilgrimage' to the salt-flats at least once in my life.

Awesome read.

I agree a more fair comparison is the SS and 5.0 GT. The fastest 0-60 times recorded in magazine tests for the 2011 GT, set up just like mine (6spd manual, 3.73 gears, Brembo package) is 4.3 seconds v.s the 2010 GT 500 coming in at 4.1 seconds. I think the SS was 4.5-4.6. So, higher HP is not necessary equivalent to higher speed. I would love to take a shot at a GT 500 with just a few bolt ons just shut those morons up. They love to tout how great their cars are. I hope $15K-$20K is worth 2/10ths of a second for them a dn 4/10ths in the quarter (12.4 v.s 12.8). I'm quite certain the 5.0 can make up those differences for a lot less money, as can the SS.

I have to say I like the LS engines. I drove one today. My Mustang loves to rev and makes its power in a different power band than the SS. The SS has more "grunt" until a certain rpm. Reminds me of the 1998 T/A WS-6 I used to have.

hahaha !!! yet once again people try to make the camaro look bad, like last time comparing it to a 90k benz come on now, lets do it the right way gt500 vs z28 THEN we'll see who really rules the muscle car world

Talking

makes me wonder how a regular GT would perform compared to the shelby... although I think the Camaro would win. Theoretically, higher horsepower means higher top speed, am I right?[/QUOTE]

Not really my camaro dosent have a speed limmiter anymore and i have 336 hp and i toped out my 01 ss at 186mph.

I didn't realize there was a Z28. I think the more likely match up would be the SS vs the GT.

Not everything has to become a Camaro/Mustang battle. Both cars are great.
Exactly, made me wish i was there !

I'm not sure that review was meant to make one car look any better than the other...I mean, they made it abundantly clear why the GT500 was faster...its not like they were hiding those 120 extra horses from the reader.

No, I think this article was to showcase the salt flats and what it means to go FAST. A low-profile writeup of a couple of guys having some fun. And they chose to do it in two iconic American muscle cars.

Thanks to the guys for sharing their fun with us. Great story and good writing. I love reading all comparisons and discussions, as it helps educate me to a certain extent.

Being a Chevy (class, style, beauty, etc.) and a Camaro lover (imagine the possibilities, bang for the buck, and how much do you want to spend), stories like these reinforces that even more.

As impressive as the Shelby GT500 is, I am even more impressed by the Camaro in this story (110+ hp and price differential, as shown partially below).

Having some more fun (source AOL Autos with evident copy/paste struggle), and as if you all didn't already know, mostly summed up above already, here is some additional repetitive comparisons....

Compare Pricing
2SS 2dr coupe Base 2dr coupe
2010 Chevrolet Camaro 2010 Ford Shelby GT500
MSRP
$33,945 $46,725
Market Price
$33,887 $43,890
Invoice Price
$32,587 $42,236
Destination Charge
$850 $850
Monthly Car Payment
$641 $882

Considering the terrible aerodynamics of both cars I suppose the numbers are okay. LS1s were doing 175 with the limiter removed and 162 limited stock 12 yrs ago, so I'm not impressed. Acceleration is the story with the GT500 and 5th SS.
