Garmin Mounting Option

AFTER TESTING I DO NOT RECOMMEND. THIS UNIT COULD PUNCH YOUR CIG LIGHTER THROUGH THE PLASTIC TRIM PANEL. TOO HEAVY FOR A VERTICAL MOUNT APPLICATION.

Been looking for a while for a good GPS mounting location and I think I might have something that will work. In my last car I used a vent mount which I really liked. But in the Camaro the center vent louvers are real long and narrow and I did not want to snap one if I hit a hard bump. I like the ability to throw the entire device in the glove box when I'm on a trip and I'm not in the car.

So here is what I got. It wobbles a little and the dang plug in cord is massive on this unit due to the traffic receiver. They have a different lighter mount version on ebay that I will probably buy also and determine which one I like better. The other one has a built in usb plug for power.

This Garmin has a built in Bluetooth transmitter and mp3 player for the best of both worlds. My last unit had the FM transmitter which sometimes was a pain finding a good channel to broadcast on.

So, here is an option for anyone that may be searching for a garmin (or any gps) mounting solution.

what is the name of that mount. I tried searching for it and found nothing. looks like a good solution for us that rarely use our gps abd don't want to mount anything anywhere on the dash.

I like but wish it didn't block the 4 pack gauges.

Mine is a ProClips Mount and the cable goes in between the vent and the dash to a hidden 12v plug.

I used the suction cup to mount mine. Ran power cable/antenna in headliner and wired to ignition in left side of dash. Powers up and down when I turn the ignition on. very clean install.

Nicely done! One of the cleanest I have seen so far. If I can find a reasonable Nav unit that accepts a vid input for a back-up camera I will do the same. Thanks for the pics

Sorry for not responding sooner to this thread. I got the second lighter mount today in the mail finally.

I have to say that neither lighter mount is acceptable to my standards. They probably work better on a lighter that is found horizontal in a dashboard; not vertical like in the Camaro. If you are interested in these anyways; go to Ebay and search "Garmin lighter mount".

The mount I shown in the OP had too much wobble and was too heavy. I used it the next day on my way to work and was scared that it was going to punch the lighter through the plastic trim. I have not used it since.

The mount I tried today was very loose and just moved from side to side.

Sorry for the cell phone pics.

At this point I will be going back to my vent mount and will have to educate anyone in my car on a trip not to man handle the thing.

Again; sorry for not responding sooner. I just wanted to put this thread out to anybody who may be doing a search on this subject. I will subscribe to this tread to hopefully catch any future questions. Thanks!

This will be the route I will be going again and it was at a good sightline position. Where did you run your wire?

I like what chapinville did but I only use my Garmin once or twice a year.

The wire goes in a gap in between the air vent and the main dash, down behind the radio to a 12v socket I installed hidden behind the 4-pack gauges.
