tic-tic-tap-tap

Has anyone else had this problem ? each day after the first start up I drive about 1.5 miles down hill and stop for a red light. Then I will hear a ticking and tapping sound comming from the rear of the car, sounds like someone tapping with a key on the finder. This will only happen after the first start each day. Weard--dealer is baffeled also..

so im NOT crazy. I'm in the same boat, if I had to put a place on it I would say rear driver-side tire well. The down side is that I don't hear it long enough to find it.

Ever heard of the urban legend of the Detroit autoworker that wired a bolt to tap on the fender of the car. Drove the new owner crazy for 20 years, til he got in a fender bender and replaced the fender and body shop found the bolt.

Yes, its the fuel pump pressure equalizing. You'll noticed that it sounds like its coming from the trunk area. Freaked me out the first few times as well.

I get it to, only once a day in the morning after I back down my driveway, and pull out. Happens about 50-60 feet down the road, then its gone. If anyone finds out let me know.

Unfortunately, this is accepted as normal. I would like to hear a engineering excuse why.

If I remember correctly and someone can correct me if I'm wrong. This is the self cleaning fuel strainer in the fuel tank. Every so often it cleans itself and when it does it makes this strange noise. I could not find the thread on this but, I remember reading this about 6 months ago on C5. I have heard this one time in the 10 months I have owned the car.

Mine does it too. Thanks, for posting issue / response. I didn't even know how to explain it. For me it happens, seconds after I start the vehicle.

That tap tap tap sound a minute or so after start up is the Evap system doing the system test. There are two solenoids back by the tank, and every cold start they go through a test sequence to make sure the tank and evap system has no leaks. My '09 Silverado makes the exact same sound every start, but the tank is further back and I only hear it if I happen to be standing outside.

You'll hear a solenoid go tap tap tap, it's letting engine vacuum into the tank. Then a sensor checks the pressure to make sure it held. Then another tap releases the vacuum. It does it after each cold start.

I've never heard of a self cleaning fuel strainer. Wonder what it does with the debris?

There is no such thing. The fuel pump module in the tank has a built in strainer/filter. If the tank ever gets so much debris in it that the strainer is plugged, the tank has to be lowered and strainer changed.

This is old news, I have a 1997 Astro that does this as well, not long after its been started, sounds like someone beating a wood spoon in a tin coffee can.
