The View outside my office window...

Here is a treat we have been enjoying for the last few days. There is a huge POD of whales that have been playing around us. We are currently about 20 miles off the coast, just North of Vittoria Brazil... These whales have been rolling, jumping and tail slapping to their hearts content. We work out here but this is still a rare enough occurance that we enjoy the views... Hope you do to...They are amazing creatures and way bigger in person than the photo's depict...

Hrmmph...I went to Hawaii a couple weeks ago and the only whales I got to see were a couple of fat tourists playing in the surf on the beach. You're a lucky sod...

Nice, and I like the color of that water! Is it as cool as it looks? I am guessing no.

I'm glad other are enjoying the views. As I said before, it's a rare event to see so many this close... For a couple of days everywhere you went on the rig people were standing near the rails pointing and commenting... It's really amazing to see one of these huge things almost completely clear the water and splash back down...

This is one of my favorite reasons for working deep and ultra deep water drilling rigs. When we fly out here, it's amazing to see the color transitions from the coast to where we work. I've worked as much as 220 miles offshore. The bluest blues you will ever see... Been a lot further out than that on tows....

Being South of the equator, we do in this particular area have a southerly current, (coming up from the south) and at times it gets downright chilly. We are far north enough right now that it's not too bad... Saturday or Sunday, we will pull anchors and head South on an 8 day tow to our next location. it'll be much cooler water down there... I just hope I don't have to perform a repeat of a few hitches ago, manriding down into the water to fix some hose hangers... It wasn't too bad here, down south, uhhhhh, ccccccccaaannnnnnnn yyyyoooouuuuuu sssssaaaaaayyyyyy ccccccccccccooooolllllldddddd. We do not have wet suits... so it's in with the coveralls or whatever we have available... Fortunately, having to go into the water is even a more rare occurance than the whale sightings...

There may have been hundreds, or more. I'm not sure how big the pods get, maybe a marine biologist will speak up if any of them are on here. We could see them as far as we could see from the rig and all the way around the rig... They are still here milling around...
As for the type.... uhhh big,..... Several people spouted guesses but none of us are really sure... I thought maybe Blue whales but I am no expert of anything, much less types of whales... I have a short video but our sat. link won't let me post it up...
