What is Ford's halo performance car? And GM's? That is comparing apples to apples.

Except you CANNOT compare a 5 seat, live axle pony car to a 2 seat, IRS equipped sports car, it is silly and really reaching.......

That's why they back Shelby's original Cobra venture, and backed the Lola-cum-GT 40 program, and built the mid-decade Ford GT..."just for fun"...

It's a low volume car, that sells at SEVERAL TIMES the GT 500 volume...

and it would cost more to design and build a car to compete than it's worth.
I'm pretty sure GM loses $1,000s on every Corvette ever made... :D

If they wanted to, they sure as hell could make a car to compete with the "almighty" Corvette.
Gosh, if only they wanted to?! How'd that Ford GT project turn out, again?!

Ford is a business, they're focus is profit, not bragging rights.
I hope, after you've read all this, you'll see the lack of insight into your comment...historically, AND now!! After all, who REALLY needs a 660 hp Stang?!...

I think it's hilarious that every time the GT500 vs. ZL1 topic is brought up, someone always mentions the Corvette, when it's completely irrelevant.
Halo vs. Halo...fair, no?!

Ford, to their credit, invented the Pony Car, have an enviable sales record for 48 Model Years consecutively, and DEFINITELY know that Market. "Infallible"? Mustang II comes to mind. "Walk on water"? Only in Dearborn...and perhaps certain areas of LI...

Nice Pontiacs, BTW.

GT500 will destroy the Camaro in the 1/4 mile but since that has happened magically many of you all of the sudden care about autocross

what is equally annoying is someone always says "nice if it can put it to the ground". :sm0: I guess those folks hasn't seen any vids of the ZL1 having a little trouble with traction as well. ;)

We are all so funny. Here we go again. Ding Ding, Round 123.

Funny how the measure being touted for supremacy by the Dearborn Dandies is 1/4-mile-only. Based solely on a 662 hp number. That, in production trim, is an unknown quantity in the hands of the "great unwashed".

"One Trick Pony" comes to mind...for SURELY you'll agree the GT 500 stands ZERO chance on a roadcourse vs. the "underpowered/traction-limited/over-weight" ZL1...right? After all, the GT 500 at 550 hp, its stable-mate the BOSS LS kicked its hiney @ VIR...and the lowly under-$40K 1LE beat the Best-handling BOSS...and the ZL1 tramples 'em ALL!

What the Camaro needs is some REAL competition...not some hobby-horse pretend-a-car with the influences of one very old chili-peddler...

Bring 'er to VIR, and let the clocks decide...

Hell of a motor. GM is going to have a tough time matching it with only 16v OHV technology at its disposal. It might be time to slap a TVS 2300 (or better) on a 7.0 block.

90% of owners on both sides will most likely hit the drag strip vs. the road course. That is why 1/4 mile times are the better measuring stick when comparing performance. That doesn't mean the two cars won't have the occasional road course meeting however it will be far less often vs. a side-by-side race down the 1320. ;)

sure you can, you just don't want to. Its the best GM has to offer today against the best Ford has to offer today. What's wrong with that comparison?

MR 45TH 04-25-2012 05:03 PM

I love it! Because in the end we the consumer will reap the benefits of auto maker competition.

Camaro_Corvette 04-25-2012 05:04 PM

With that amount of power, if it doesn't beat the ZL1 around the Nurburgring then they got problems.
