These videos are SICK.

Maybe they took the Recaro's, dual-mode exhaust, intake manifold and headers straight off the Z2/8. I don't care. This car is about 1,000,000 times better than the (IMO extremely disappointing) Z2/8. Sounds awesome, loud as balls, looks great and 8300 RPM's in an NA V8? WOOT! Man, I think I finally like a Ford. It's been awhile.

Performance-wise, I have a feeling this is going to smoke the Z2/8 around the 'ring.

The fully optioned GT350R will probably cost less than the Z2/8, which is a total stripper no matter what. I see this car having a major advantage. GM isn't doing anything radical, here. They're recycling engines they've had for years. You have to hand it to Ford for designing a completely new motor. GM doesn't have the guts to do that!

I think the GT350R will come in at slightly less than or no more than the Z/28 when fully optioned with all the creature comforts and still beat it around the ring. That's VERY impressive if you ask me. And that sound, oh man. I sure hope for Ford's sake this motor holds up to 100,000 miles. Those heads will be under a lot of pressure at 8250 RPM's. Hopefully the valves don't explode like on the LS7...

Glad you think the GT350R is a million times better. So, go ahead to try to purchase one for the same price or less than a Z/28 and them move on to the Mustang forums.

Z28 is a modified Camaro SS.

Both cars are 100% factory vehicles.

Kerry Baldori, Chief Functional Engineering, Global Performance Vehicles at Ford:

"We brought our GT350R and our GT350 Track Pack here at Grattan to do fair, back to back same day and same driver comparisons. The GT350R with the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires is equal to the 100th of a second as fast as the Porsche 911 GT3 and it is over a second quicker than the Z/28.

The base GT350 with Track Pack, which uses the Pilot Super Sport tire, is equal again, to within a 100th of a second to the Porsche Carerra and the Corvette C7 with the Z51 package."

What he means is the Z/28 starts life as an SS. This is fact. RPO changes it to Z/28 equipment/trim. Both are still built in-house, but GM's done it for seemingly ever.

In what way does it start as an SS? They both start from the same BIW. It's not like GM takes an SS, strips it and rebuilds it as a Z/28.

The Z/28 starts it's life as a Z/28.

At no point is it ever a SS.

Where do people get this crap?

okbfd 07-30-2015 10:26 AM

The Z-28 is an awesome car and with back seats and an AC it's a heck of a lot more comfy. I am really surprised at the fanboyism on this site. It's certainly not as prevalent on others.

I'm curious to find out how a GT350 is an aftermarket car. Apparently it is a base model turned into one.

Much like the previous GT500, it's clearly an aftermarketShelby produced model, like Roush, Saleem, Hennessey and Lingenfelter products.

Go internet!

A couple months later... this is still quote funny! :smiling1:

It just makes me laugh to take note of how ignorance plays such a major role in the lives of people who prefer this over that.

The R certainly has no trouble beating the Z/28 and from the looks, the non R is right with it. I'm surprised too, though, that there isn't more chatter. Bottom line is simple: EXCELLENT performer.

Of course, I don't know about dual mode exhaust, etc. ... but I'm told Ford's been using Recaros in Mustangs since 2002.

I think the base GT350 is going to come in a little shy of ZL1 times for a great price/perfirmance bargain, especially considering its 3 years older and still costs a lot less.

Your GT350 with performance pack (ala mangina...errr...magna ride) is gonna land between zl1 and z28 performance for a price thats very competitive considering what it offers.

The GT350R ought to edge a z28 by a small margin. Thats what carbon wheels and less weight with a bit of a power advantage will do.

Honestly, other than price per model, NOBODY, should be surprised how any level of GT350 performs.

3yrs older and costs less? Are you referring to a used ZL1? Anyway, base v base, the ZL1 is more expensive than the GT350 by like 6k.

I wouldn't be surprised, based on known numbers, if the GT350, non R, on a typical road course, matches the ZL1 or beats it. The only reason I'm thinking that, really, is because they say the R beats the Z/28 and on various tracks, the Z/28 simply batters the ZL1. I can't really see the R being all that much quicker than the GT350. After all, they aren't that different. That said, GT350 might just need... really need... the MR suspension. :happy0180:

Sounds great, but who wants to wait for a 2017 model when we can compare high end stuff like the Z/28 right now?

It probably wouldn't be at all difficult to get one in Z/28 range or less, but it won't be a 2015 model, since they're only making like 37 of them.

Yeah... they jacked up the radiator cap and drove a different car under it! :bonk:

Why would they do that? Further, seemingly forever? They've both been doing this for the whole time, to some degree. Clearly, there have been some outside builds on both sides, but the majority have been in house since the 1960's.

That! It may be that they were gonna build and SS... then changed their mind!

Well... ya see... what had happened is... :bonk: The GT350 done by Shelby during the GT500 run was "built" by Shelby American... when they modified a GT.

My GT350R with all the options except the car cover MSRP'd at $66K and some change. That's $9K less than the MSRP was on my z/28 and the GT350R offers more amenities than my z did.

Front Runner 08-01-2015 07:27 PM

I think one reason there isn't a lot of chatter about the GT350/R is because Ford is releasing info about performance, not independent professional drivers/magazines because it hasn't been released to them yet.

I'm not saying that Ford is being dishonest but I think many are waiting for head to head challenges by the same testers at the same time.
