Not to worry all you Camaro fans eager for al fresco driving, because we got our first peek at Newport Convertible Engineering's latest project — a ragtop version of the 2010 Camaro. NCE has a 24-year history of engineering convertible concept cars for big automakers along with bespoke conversions of exotics and luxury cars. Its bread and butter comes from producing convertible versions of cars such as the Chrysler 300, Cadillac CTS, Hummer H2 and Toyota FJ Cruiser. Every year, NCE targets a new model to showcase at the annual SEMA show and other auto shows. Following up on the popularity of last year's Dodge Challenger convertible, NCE decided that Chevrolet's new muscle car would be a prime candidate for going topless. We'll have the world's first road test of the SEMA-bound Camaro convertible prototype very shortly, but we couldn't wait to give you a sneak preview of the car in its final stages of production. The orange SS model survived the top surgery basically intact, other than sacrificing a bit of backseat hiproom to allow space for the top mechanism. The windshield frame, rockers and the area from the rear of the door opening to the backside of the trunk are now reinforced. The electrically operated top features a high-quality canvas exterior, insulation and suede headliner. Keep an eye out for our road test with complete details on pricing and other specs. NCE is taking orders now on its Web site. Customers provide the Camaro model of their choice to NCE for the conversion, which takes about 4-6 weeks. Inside Line says: Camaro fans eager to have their day in the sun finally get their chance to buy a Camaro convertible. Maybe their only chance. — Patrick C. Paternie, Correspondent |

I'm not one for convertibles, but that's pretty cool for those that want it and have the money.
|
I really hope the shark fin antennae was just sitting on that spot on the trunk temporarily... other than that, this looks really sweet, but living in Iowa I would only get one as a secondary vehicle... which wont be happening any time soon lol.
|
what will GM big wigs think when they see people croozing those around. haha
|
awesome can't wait to see what the official one looks like too
that looks really good too it almost looks like the concept in my avatar....drools |
4-5k is a killer deal. Bet and SS Vert from GM would cost more than that.
Only worry I would have is the integrity of the car cutting the roof off. |
What kind of other chassis reinforcements were done? I saw rocker and rear structure reinforcements, but were SFCs added too? Interesting - but a little scary to have that much of the car chopped up. At least it looks like they're pretty knowledgable in this :)
MORE PICS'! :D |

...If I win a Camaro; I just might be doing this.
|
I don't think it looks that great at all. Just my 2c.

Nevermind.. I'll stick with the hardtop afterall. Spend the 4-5K on a used '00 -'03 Honda Nighthawk 750. |
I'd feel safer waiting for the factory version. I'll never forget how bad the cowl shake was on my 69 SS/RS ragtop. I don't feel any cowl shake on my GT500, although there is no way it can as rigid as the coupe and I have not hit any bad railroad tracks with it yet.
I'd love to see a black Camaro convertible with red stripes in my garage parked next to the red GT500 convertible with black stripes! |
I don't like it! I don't like that they took the quarter glass away, and that 3rd brake light is just a bolt on. It looks terrible. BTW the placement of the onstar antenna could have been better too! that just looks bad! I think I will just wait for GMs!
|
Side shot with top up(wanna see if still has 'chopped' appearance)?..
|
Too pricey 4-5k Plus labor and it takes 4-6 weeks. That ain't gonna cheap. Also, it looks cheap with the 3rd brake light and antenna. Also, raise your hand if you want to wait another 4-6 weeks to drive your car after we waited all this time. Good thing I like the coupe. No thanks. |
wonder if they could do a custom targa top? or t top? i would definetly do that if available
|
with $$ you can do anything. good for the owner of this car. it will be one of the very first ..
|
:w00t:...can't wait to see it complete.
|
F that sh!t. Not cuttin up my car for that!
|
that is freakin cool. tho I'd wait to see what 2011 vert prices are going to be before chopping up my new car.
|
...yeah T-Top Mod might be doable, but I love the Coupe look vs. Vert. And the placement of the Third-Eye and Sat-Antenna are hidious. Please mod that!!!
|
won't the rear quarter window be gone in the official convertible as well? its a convertible...its not that big of a deal if the plastic cover doesn't have a plastic rear quarter
and from what i remember the official convertible mule had a tacky third brake light as well and the antenna was in a more awkward position... i say it looks good...only concerns would be the safety compared to the official one |

The sharkfin antennae is for XM, and it *might* be a combo for Onstar/GPS but I'm not sure. Satellite signals need line of site so that is pretty much the only place it can go unless you want it as a hood ornament.
I think GM has a diversity antennae setup for Corvette Convertibles (two antennas, one on each mirror) but who knows how much trouble it is to convert the wiring and match it to Camaro's non-diversity tuner in the radio head unit. |
I never understood why people like convertible's but this is creative.
|
i think gm should put the onstar antenna where ncs has it...it doesn't obstruct from the beautiful backside like the gm mule does
|
I like it when I see this I cannot wait until 2011 so I can order the wifes 2SS/RS vert. I told her order a 2010 2SS/RS w/ sunroof now and pay $38k or wait for the vert and pay $45-$48k then she said she would rather wait :( Oh well it's her car
Sean |
haha i didnt know the RS package stood for radio shack until I saw the 3rd light :P
seriously, looks cool but need cooler lights |
That's actually pretty cool... But why have these guys do it when the best convertible conversion specialists are obviously Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May of Top Gear?
Warning: 11 min video... But hilarious! |
