Z/28 Car and Driver Lightning Lap Results!

Lap Time: 2:50.9

I have to admit I'm stunned. Having tracked my Z/28, I realize it's a very quick car -- but this is amazing. Talk about punching above your weight...

Wow, amazing it is within a tenth of a second of the F12. Is the full article available somewhere?

That is amazing. Some serious company the Z/28 is in!

CamaroTom 09-04-2014 06:15 PM

That's awesome the Z/28 almost got the Viper and GTR also.

The BMW M4 ran a 3:00 lap. The 1LE ran a 2:58 last year!

They did a lot of changes to the track so comparisons might be skewed.

Bhobbs 09-04-2014 06:23 PM

Awesome results.

The track was repaved so shouldn't the results from this year be faster than if they ran the old track?

2cnd chance 09-04-2014 06:27 PM

That's amazing. And this is considered a high speed track. If it had the same power to weight as the GTR, Ferrari, Viper, Porsche Turbo and Corvette it'd really embarrass them.

In my book a tenth is nonexistent. Great job!

PYROLYSIS 09-04-2014 06:38 PM

Wow. Gad to see the Z/28 continue to surprise the competition. Awesome results.

2cnd chance 09-04-2014 07:10 PM

Comparing this group the Z/28 is not out-of-line weight wise. Reading their thoughts on the C7 I can't wait to see how the C7 Z06 does.

Zfatuated 09-04-2014 07:27 PM

Don't you people understand? There is no reason to own a Z/28, it's always a no-brainer- choose the Corvette! Everyone knows this. Besides, all those cars would have beat the Z/28 if they had the same tires the Z does! The tires are the only thing that matters! Z/28 is an overpriced piece of crap. Sheesh

F*ckin' aye is my real opinion. Suck on it haters. GM engineers- I hope you guys are smoking cigars and drinking fine whiskey right now.

LOWDOWN 09-04-2014 07:35 PM

Consider this: Of the Top 11 cars tested, "Peak Speed" for the Z/28 was the 2nd Slowest, yet it clicked off a Top 5 Time!

That, folks, is very impressive...at ANY price!

[Number 4, at 4+ TIMES the price, had not-yet-ready-for-primetime tires, and beat the ZEE by a 1/10, or...]

On the other hand the Viper with its power to weight should have performed much much better. They better get to work on that chassis.

motorhead 09-04-2014 07:42 PM

I'm more impressed with the C7 than the Z/28 after seeing that. Look at the peak speeds. Hell they don't need a 650hp vette to win. Just the fancy brakes and tires off the Z/28.

The Z06 is going to rip the hell out of VIR. Can't wait to see its time...

URBAN LEGEND 09-04-2014 07:48 PM

Don't get too excited. Not sure of any racing league that races only one lap.

Need4speed_motorsports 09-04-2014 07:49 PM

Thats very impressive.

They all raced one lap, even playing field. I think the Continental sports cup challenge confirms it's multi lap capability. They are in first place!

And that's all I'm saying. The vette's time is the one that impressed me the most here. I would expect not less from the Z/28. After all, that was the entire reason building it.

Sven59 09-04-2014 08:16 PM

Does anyone know if this is the first time a Camaro has beaten a Vette in this type of comparison?

SamHouseIII 09-04-2014 08:54 PM

Sweet!

TonyNDeb 09-04-2014 09:27 PM

Bad A$$ machine.

Wilbur 09-04-2014 09:30 PM

Wow, great numbers

Has to be the first time, and I also admit that I too, am impressed with the corvette. Now, it makes me smile to see the numbers for our Z/28 owners, but imagine what that car could do with some proper "breathing"

I've always maintained that GM should've incorporated a feature so that, whenever you drive a Z/28 into the paddock or pits, the theme from "Shaft" begins to play over the track's PA system...

By the way the Z28 that leads the Continental, it is detuned, debraked and detired.

Jc's1LE 09-04-2014 10:05 PM

Wowza that Z was moving for those times i wonder what the z06 is gonna lay down

Whaaahhttt???

How can the Z/28.R be worth a damn thing without those tires?!? Everyone knows they're the real "secret sauce" behind the car's performance...

yeah they made them change the brakes and they use and the tires and they had to drop the HP to meet the guidelines and it is still amazing. There is a thread here somewhere with pics. Sorry missed the sarcasm in the lower line.:bonk:

Harryoz 09-05-2014 04:50 AM

great article, what a car

titanfan 09-05-2014 05:49 AM

About what I expected from the Z. As someone already pointed out, it should not be any surprise that it flat out performs on a track like VIR; it was what it was designed for!

All that means is heavy grip, and later braking.

And that's a stock car? Last time I checked the Z/28 didn't qualify for any series in stock form.

No one raced anything. Lol.

Don't get me wrong. The car does well. I get it. The car did well with the best lap posted. Great job GM.

I get it. The Z/28 performs on the track.

We already had this discussion in another thread. I already know that there isn't anything "stock" about those cars. My question would be. What do those cars run at the lighting lap?
