Dual oil coolers for serious track duty

4 Attachment(s)
Hi guys,

After I built my 416 which was generating tons of heat, the oil temps were sky high within 3 laps even on a mild day. To remedy this, I had dual oil coolers installed to the left and right of the radiator. We threw the 1LE oil cooler in the trash, and installed these air to oil coolers instead. Now the radiator no longer cools the oil, so the coolant also runs nice and cool on a hot track day after many hard laps.

They each have custom shrouds that funnel the air from the high pressure grille openings through the coolers. I sold the Camaro so I can't do a thorough photo shoot or write up, but I'll do my best. Partial parts list:

2x Setrab 20-row oil coolers, 50-920-7612
Setrab EGM-113 lo profile oil cooler thermostat
SETM22AN8 -8 22mm oil cooler adapter
-8 Perform-o-flex hose
2x custom shrouds

7's Only Racing at Buttonwillow Raceway did all of the work, top notch shop. If you are fortunate enough to be in CA, drop off your car with Tom and Bette and they will take care of you.

Attached are a couple of pics, sorry they aren't the best but they are what I still had in my phone.

And to all that had requested this along time ago, sorry I took so long guys. I am running a full season of SCCA racing in the Mustang now. Really miss the Camaro, but am enjoying racing in the 'Stang.

You're welcome. By the way, I miss my Camaro. The Camaro's handling is a lot more predictable at the limit, and boy do I miss the power! The Mustang class rules dictate the stock 4.6L, it's totally out of steam in fourth gear. But the racing is competitive and the adrenaline rush is addictive

So what exactly didnyou do with the stock oil cooler ports?? And what oil pump did you run?

The lines that went to the 1LE cooler were rerouted to the new coolers, and no longer go through the radiator. Stock oil pump that came on 1LE. In combination with the Improved Racing oil pan baffle, it works flawlessly. I verified this by continually monitoring oil pressure and oil temp including through long high g sweepers. With slicks and downforce, no oil starvation at all. No need for a dry sump system.

What was the highest oil temp you saw after the cooler install?

Oil Temp:
Before oil coolers: 290 F in 3 laps, had to back off.
After oil coolers: 220 F max in 25 min. sessions; Ran hard for two days!

I also noticed coolant temps lower, I think I only hit 207 F the entire day.

This was on a mild day, I want to say in the 60s to 70s ambient, but I don't recall. On a hot day, these coolers should be able to take anything I throw at them.

They need to add this setup to the C7 Z06, LOL

Thanks! Hope your 1LE went to a good home.

No problem.

Yes, the Camaro was purchased by a track rat in New Zealand! Kind of cool. He races and also does fun track days with his buddies, the Camaro will be his toy that he can drive to the track with AC and comfort.

Damn OC that looks like right where my brake vents are?

Yep, it's the ideal place on the front end as the high pressure will flow air though it per the GM engineers. If I had kept my Camaro, I was going to do brake ducts through the fog light holes. Not as good, but hopefully good enough.

so OC, how does that stang handle? how is the bottom of the corkscrew with a solid axle?

Not too bad at the bottom of the corkscrew with the correct line. The Mustang turns in well, however it is loose off. So as you exit a corner, you cannot use nearly as much throttle as you can on the Camaro, Viper or a C6 Vette (the cars I have the most track time with). When the ass end steps out, it is harder to catch than any of the above cars. Steering is numb. So it is a harder car to drive near the limit, which is where you are the entire race. It is however, pretty good and is fast enough. I have turned a 2:00.3 at Thunderhill even with the car not aligned correctly (only -2 degrees camber, needs -3). I have also turned a 1:41 at Laguna Seca. Still learning Laguna Seca though, I hope to be in the 1:39s soon. This is a 2005 Mustang with stock 4.6L, so it's not exactly a rocket. Not in the same league as a stock 1LE, but still really fun to race with a bunch of other like cars.

Hey, your having fun doing what you like to do so I'd say its a good day! Hope someone is getting some use out of the 1LE.
