Intake scoop
 

What are your thoughts on the intake scoop. Seems like a great idea.... until it rains. Have debated on getting one as I know cold air/more air is better. Interested in everyone’s input on this.

I have one. Drove through several rain storms on my way to Camarofest with no issues.

It is not blowing water straight into your gilter by any means. The scoop is 17 inches from the bottom of my filter. There is no worries in my mind over it. I put a white box on the scoop so you could see it better in the picture.

I just had one installed, but haven't driven it in rain yet. I really feel like it's doing what it's supposed to do. Sucking in air..

It's not the rain itself you need to worry about, it is the puddles and flooded streets. I know this first hand. Any intake that is low mounted like this is something you have to be very careful about when driving in flooded areas. That is how I hydrolocked my L99 last year. Snapped a rod and demolished the piston skirt when my Vararam sucked up the wake my car made when trying to drive through water I thought was more shallow. 100% my fault.

So bottom line, if you are careful and use common sense any of these low mounted intakes and JRE scoop will be perfectly fine. The one that greenhornet showed us is probably even more safe than my Vararam as it has the front bumper and wheel well shielding it. The Vararam VR-SS has a huge scoop hanging down in front of the radiator.

I have not heard of any issues with the intake scoop as of yet. I have heard of issues with the Injen CAI on the V6 models though. I think that one actually relocates the filter pod very low.

A little confused by a comment as someone seems to be implying the intake is lower compared to stock, it's not, it sits in the exact same spot as before having the scoop. FYI

Exactly, and it’s not like the scoop runs up to the filter.

I used to DD my car in FL with a scoop. Zero issues. Summers it pours every day around 5pm.

I felt a difference after I installed the scoop.

I have one seems reasonable that you’d have colder air entering the motor. No problem with water here tho. I live in AZ and get 1 day a rain a year and my camaro is garaged. I’d say go for it, it’s cheap.

I would not worry. I have had mine on for years. It's just all about bringing the fresh cool air... when can that ever be bad. Water would not make its way up that high unless you submerged the car in a lake.

Apex is not in business anymore..... And yes I daily with the Cold Air Inductions and a scoop in Rainy Oregon, and back when they first came out a few people Hydro locked their engines with a stupid tube down toward the ground which really does not help due to the length and that was with the INJUN.....

ruining their engines down in sunny Cal which BTW does not have a good storm water system often anywhere down south so high water happens.... Being smart enough not to drive through it helps 100% And having a long long tube not good for performance either...… I also relocated the windshield washer bottle and it just more a pain to fill with the long tube having to be jiggled to vent air...

No worries with my scoop and CAI I try not to drive in the rain anyway but I have been caught a couple times, no issue at all. To get enough water to hydro lock an engine you would have to be driving through deep water and pretty much submerge the air filter, or fast enough through water deep enough to come in through the lower grill that it would shoot a ton of water up into the air filter.... Don't do that. Not a hard situation to avoid.
