Anyone have garage fitment issues?

I'm apartment shopping...just curious whether if I see a garage offered, it's a given that the Camaro would fit? Obviously I'd test fir...but curious if I should be looking for a double or anything. Around Boston some of the places were built in the 20-60's and from the pics they look potentially tight.

Ryanbabz71 05-06-2012 01:04 PM

Kinda it's tight in my 3rd car side with all my toolboxes and shelves

I actually measured our garage before buying the Camaro...

Ryanbabz71 05-06-2012 01:27 PM

I think if I remember right it's 192 inches long

190.4 inches overall length, 75.5 inches overall width (per GM website....)

Nameless 05-06-2012 02:26 PM

I live in an apartment with a garage and the only thing I had to watch out for was the width of the door. It's fine once you get in but I only have about 2 inches outside both side mirrors to make it in. Gotta be slow and careful for sure.

That dimension is with the doors closed. I'm a big guy, so to open the doors, to get in and out of the vehicle, you need to add another 24" (preferably 36") on at least one side. I always have to let my passenger get out BEFORE I pull into my garage. Length is no problem.

2 inches on each side? Wow, that has got to be tough. I have a problem with judging distances witn the Gen5 Camaro, can't see the fenders over the hood.

steverc 05-06-2012 07:26 PM

These Camaros are FAT, wide bodied cars. Thats why they handle so nice. On my first test drive I drove it to my house and pulled it into the garage to check it out. I have a curved driveway so it is really important not to try to turn while the front of the car is still in the garage. My wife has only scraped the front right fender against the garage door trim TWICE in 22 months. I tried to tell her that we really need 100% no brushing against the white garage door trim. I told her that maybe she should use the compass to be sure she is backing straight out since the car is headed straight north when its in the garage.

That's what she said.

2011ss/rs 05-06-2012 08:23 PM

My house has a one car garage attached to the house and my G8 fits better in it then the Camaro did so I had a 24 x 30 garage built for the Camaro.

lawman007 05-06-2012 08:30 PM

I would keep looking till I found an apartment with a garage big enough to accomodate. You plan on driving in winter or storing? Maybe they can get you a bigger garage for a few more bucks a mo. or if it is next to your apartment get a bigger one several down from your apartment. Guess it's on a case by case basis. Happy hunting!

Sir Nuke 05-06-2012 08:48 PM

well I'm building a new house.....and foir me, the garage is VERY VERY IMPORTANT.....my garage is 45' x 24'......3 1/2 bays LOTS of room!!

cmb74656 05-06-2012 09:31 PM

My parents garage is parallel to the street. I'm glad I don't have to make a 90 degree turn to back in there every day.

lelzie 05-06-2012 09:34 PM

I originally had a big issue with space, then I realized, my wifes car is a POS. Now that she parks on the street, I have plenty of space.

CookieCk 05-06-2012 09:38 PM

Mine doesn't fit in my garage... The space inside isn't an issue, but the garage doors are too small. For the moment it's right outside the garage under a car canopy, but I plan to either take out the two doors and replace them with one big garage door, or build a detached garage with a bigger door, whichever money allows(though I'd prefer the detached garage).

FFPM73 05-06-2012 10:09 PM

My old house had a 2 1/2 garage with 2 single doors which the opening was too small unless the car went in on an angle drivers mirror first then passenger side then straighten out. I have replaced the passenger mirror twice because of it. My new house, I have a 3 car garage attached to the house and a 40x70x50 hanger detached which now house all my tools, lift and most importantly my Camaros...... No more garage space issues for me...:)

SamHouseIII 05-06-2012 10:25 PM

3 Car Garage, so no issues, got the Camaro and my Avalanche in no problems

I have this same situation now. I have to put the car in at an angle so I can open the driver door enough to get out. Nerve racking to be sure, especially with all that the damn beeping!! :mad0260:

I had a 33' x 21' garage built. Made sure the doors were 9' wide, because I was fed up with tiny 7' wide British standard doors.

sprtplt 05-07-2012 11:09 AM

The garage door problem with Camaros is that the side mirrors don't fold.
Corvette mirrors fold and that makes it no problem for a standard eight foot opening.

GMguy70 05-07-2012 11:46 AM

My mirrors are really close to not fitting through the door. It's an 8ft wide door but with the wood trim it ends up being less than that. You better measure first.

This is why I always back into my garage. I angle the mirror in and down and cruise right in. About three inches to spare on each mirror through the doorway.

Fish-man 12-18-2012 02:40 PM

back from the dead...
does anyone have a measurement from mirror to mirror edges?
I think I've seen 80-82inches, can anyone confirm?
would need to roll windows down and put the tape thru both to measure this...

Better make it 28' deep, Nuke. My garage is 24' deep and although the Camaro has plenty of room, I have to pull my quad cab truck inches from the back wall to have room to get around the back end.

AZSS6SPD 12-18-2012 02:57 PM

Doors

I opened my doors all the way. They extended 44 inches from the side of the car. With that in mind, I built my garage 30 feet wide for 2 cars.

Spanky1 12-18-2012 03:06 PM

With the Camaro being kinda wide, I don't understand why the side mirrors don't fold in!! Most cars have fold-in mirrors now right?

Nope....that was 1.92 inches :laughabove:

Kadet1 12-18-2012 06:49 PM

I seem to have a much easier time backing into my garage or into parking spaces instead of pulling in forward because you can't see anything over that front right fender.

jshaf 12-18-2012 07:06 PM

the house I live in was built in 1962 and the garage edition was put on in 1980, I think it was built with the VW bug in mind because it is unbelieveably tight, so much so that I don't dare try to squeeze her in there. didn't even dawn on me when I went to buy her. Guess I was in Camaro tunnel vision, or is that Permagrin tunnel vision...LOL

ctbassman 12-21-2012 01:12 AM

I have a tight one car garage attached to my house, I hung some tennis balls from the ceiling with kite string so I line up perfect every time and stop perfect every time.

IIxD3VOxII 12-21-2012 04:18 AM

I have a tight 1 car garage as well. Problem is, I have shelving that is not removable on the driver side (pulling straight in). I can't back in because I have the Razzi ground effect kit, so I cant clear the front clip. So I opt to park in the driveway. Either way I only have 2" to spare due to the mirror width. Sad thing... My Escalade fit when I still had it.

INTIMIDAT3R 12-21-2012 05:58 AM

My only garage fitment issue is that I can't get 3 Camaros in it.

My ZL1 will have to wait.

nferno 12-21-2012 08:04 AM

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/albumt...?dl=1356098535 :headbang:I just made it fit.

And don't forget that when the car is in, Camaro Gen 5 have the longest doors of all modern cars at this time. Source: GM The making of the Camaro.
