No price, performance numbers or HP numbers, but Al did say that the ZL1 is being engineered as the ultimate drag strip car as well as the ultimate track car... and that you will be seeing numbers in the next few months that will "astound" you.

Best regards,

Elie

Also confirmed:

-- Al was pretty clear the the HP numbers WILL be HIGHER than the 550 the the CTS-V has and that the price will not be disclosed.
-- Al, also said that production is in the 1st quarter of 2012, but would not get any more specific.

Nice option for those that want it!

Don't hold your breath on that one. There has not been anywhere near the demand for a convertible as there has been for an automatic.

but there is a gt500 convertible, so i would not rule it out. i am a hardtop guy myself.

Fogey 06-11-2011 01:42 PM

Any details on the automatic?

Is it an auto with tiptronic or an electronic clutch?

They did not give any technical details on the transmission as far as I know. I am sure that a full official press release will come that will give more details.

True however I think that their next project is going to be a competitor to the Boss 302 and by the time that is done it will almost be time for the 6th gen however maybe they will squeeze it in there.

OPP 06-11-2011 01:50 PM

SHIT!!! I haven't received my Camaro yet and now I'll have to trade it in for a ZL1 next year. What can I say? I'm an auto trans guy.

Shurenuff 06-11-2011 01:55 PM

There you go, hope those waiting for this are happy and this announcement made their day! And on a plus side, no more complaining from you auto weenies ;)

SS-screamer 06-11-2011 02:19 PM

How much will these two goodies add to the bottom line on the car?

On the CTS-V the auto runs about $2200 more but I can't find the Performance Traction Management cost.

jeffs2011ss 06-11-2011 02:23 PM

yes
happy days are here

GearheadSS 06-11-2011 02:26 PM

I had a stong feeling that they would offer one. I mean, the first test mule we saw was an automatic and the CTS-V is available with one so it just made sense.

GreenMonster 06-11-2011 02:29 PM

Yes!!!!!!! I hope it gets the same hp as the manual- either way this a great news

STEALTH_MODE 06-11-2011 02:30 PM

Good to know GM listened to all those that wanted an auto trans. Now all we need is the official specs and price!

hv92 06-11-2011 02:30 PM

i bet the manual-only guys are butthurt. lolz.

Z4me 06-11-2011 02:35 PM

How does the traction affect the car (for weather conditions etc.), or is it mainly for track purposes?? It's on the corvette ZR1 so sounds like it must
be a pretty exclusive feature. Nvermind I see there's a thread about it here, sounds good.

Chevy Camaro ZL1 getting an automatic transmission

Ray Wert -At today's "Camaro Homecoming event" in Oshawa, Canada, Al Oppenheiser from the Chevy Camaro team told folks that the Chevy Camaro ZL1 will come with an automatic transmission as an option. No word yet from Chevy's communications team.

This slushbox will supposedly be in addition to the high-performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual - the "MG9" version of the transmission. I guess it's possible — considering the General's able to mate an auto tranny to the Cadillac CTS-V — and that uses the same burnout-inducing 550 HP, 550 lb-ft of torque 6.2-liter LSA V8 engine.

But just because they can — do they have to?

Here's our first-hand report from Jalopnik reader Andrew:

Just wanted to let you know that at the Camaro Homecoming event in Oshawa today Al Oppenheiser from GM announced that they will offer an automatic transmission for the upcoming Camaro ZL1. Additionally the ZL1 will also have the Performance Traction Management system from the Corvette ZR1. No details on the transmission were given. This is probably a pretty important development because it may cause Ford to follow suit and offer an automatic GT500 for the first time.

Haha the Andrew they are referring to in that article is me. I sent them the news when it was announced this morning.

Z_Rocks 06-11-2011 03:00 PM

I can't see anyone buying an SS and then spending (lots) of money to add S/C, breaks, cooling system, suspension work, exhaust, tune and etc. where they can buy a brand new factory warranty ZL1. Anyone who wants a hi performance car, this is it. P E R I O D !!!

Many will throw the warranty out the window on their ZL1. Some guys can't leave anything stock. Just look at the GT500. I frequently see GT500s in the shop getting modded.
That can also be said for the Z06 Vette, etc. Guy just love to make their cars faster even if they come with 550hp from the factory.

People will also still purchase SS's and put superchargers on them. Sometimes it's easier to spend 35K on an SS. Then when you have the money spend another 10K on a supercharger, etc.
Some guys just don't have $55k from the get go.

It can also be a lot harder to convince the wife that you need a $55K Camaro.

But for the people that can afford it, getting a ZL1 will be the way to go.

SQUALO 06-11-2011 03:23 PM

GM, thank you for listening and bringing the auto option :clap::clap:

REAPER SS 06-11-2011 03:26 PM

Not necessarily. Maybe they don't like the cosmetics on the ZL1? Just like a GT whooping up on a Cobra, I would think that there would be plenty people in a modded SS that would like to put down a ZL1 on the track.

tsnow 06-11-2011 03:52 PM

Thank you, thank you, thank you GM!

Props for listening to your customer base and those here that are die hard Camaro enthusiasts!

You are proving to us that the "old" GM is no more.

Now how about that TF3/Leno front fascia or at least a performance parts grille option?

illiceman 06-11-2011 03:54 PM

Well I will be getting the auto as long as the performance is as good or better than the 6 speed.I do hope the ZR1 system will include the new tires.Wow.

MyIBMssRS 06-11-2011 03:57 PM

This news makes me very happy!!! :happyanim:

alexcfwu 06-11-2011 04:08 PM

Can't wait any longer... manual or auto... it doesn't matter, chevy all the way. :chevy:

Sweet Z 06-11-2011 04:24 PM

Sunroof Option

This is great news and speaks well for Chevrolet listening to what many have asked...put a sunroof in it, and I'm in for one!

kennynobodyrs 06-11-2011 04:52 PM

so question, if u add meth injection or something and a tune, would it void ur factory warranty? i might would consider one of these but im looking at a goal of 600 rwhp so i would need some more boost

Oh, you know there will be and I tell you it is one of the things that makes a car guy, a car guy. Good, ol competition. It really doesn't get any better.
:headbang: I can't wait to see some of the matchups.

The number of convertibles of a model that are sold are rarely as many as the number of coupes that are sold, but that doesn't stop auto manufacturers from offering convertibles. Chevrolet will not sell as many LT and SS convertibles as coupes, but a convertible model is still offered for the LT and SS.

Yes, if the ZL1 is going to compete with the GT500 on all levels, a ZL1 convertible must be offered.

oldfriend 06-11-2011 05:00 PM

I can already feel that darn worm growing !!!

dgformula2k 06-11-2011 05:01 PM

I agree, there should be a convertible ZL1. Doesn't mean there will be though. That would be quite an expensive Camaro. Like Corvette GS expensive.

AUS10BMX 06-11-2011 05:15 PM

Yea! That's awesome that they listened to the demand and interest.

Except that it doesn't compete with the GS Corvette. If it's going to be priced in line with the GT500, the convertible should be about as much as a GT500 convertible.
