Too Much Oil?

First oil change 2012 ss/rs I filled up oil filter prior to installing. while putting in the mobile 1 oil I thought there were gallon=4 quarts. on my second one "gallon" I noticed there 5 quart containers. so I stopped with about a quart left in the container. I started it for a min then shut it off let it set for a few min and checked the oil and noticed it right at the top of the XXXXXX marks maybe a hair over.

Im going on a long road trip in a few days, my car has 4k miles on it

Should I drain a little out or will it be ok?

I think you will be fine, do you have a catch can? I think that might help with assuring that it will be ok too.

You be ok

That's full to me.

I'd say get a catch can before any other mod. After all whats the point of having all of those performance enhancing mods and the carbon build up is contradicting the mods and decreasing the overall horse-power, it only takes 30 minutes to install.

Well, I am getting a catch can made by elite engineering from apex speed. its is 165 dollars with free shipping. The elite catch can is just as good as the other ones. But if you get a cheap one, you might as well not even use one. A quality catch can is well worth it because if you don't get a quality one you might as well use a coffee filter. I believe a quality one is a good idea. If you intend on keeping your car for your whole life span and driving it on long trips like you are then I would just get a good quality catch can like the elite engineering. And if you can afford it overnight it so you can put it on before your trip. But if you can't get it on by your trip thats fine it should be waiting for you by the time you get back. For the money the elite engineering catch can is an awesome catch can, here it is: L99: http://www.apex-speed.com/elite-engi...c-300-l99.html
LS3: http://www.apex-speed.com/elite-engi...c-300-ls3.html

How often do you check/change a catch can? say, in 4000 miles of driving...worse in stop and go or highway?

GVA 45TH 2SS 06-07-2013 07:48 PM

It depends on how well the rings seated during break in as to how much oil blow by you will get.
now with that in mind I drain my RX catch can about every 3000 miles. I only get about a teaspoon full. your results may vary.

Elite & Rx in my opinion are the best,I have them both. Checking your oil normal-if you see a drop in level check catch can. I check mine often cause of the way I drive. But always check when you change oil & empty it. The Rx from JDPmotorsports is $139 Painted the color of the car.

Should I drain a little out or will it be ok?

So you put in 9 or more quarts instead of the required 8. Check your oil again after your car sits for a while. Myself if I did this I would be draining some out.

SSMickey 06-08-2013 07:24 AM

The easy way to drain a bit of oil is to change the filter and don't pre fill it. That will get almost a quart out.
