Questions about camaro in UK

I'm military and I will be moving to lakenheath in a few months. I wanted to ask a few questions about the area. what octane gas do they use? and is there any performance shops around? How well will my big car fit on the roads?

Applegarth 04-19-2011 02:36 PM

RAF lakenheath has 90 (UK 94) octane fuel, RAF Mildenhall has 94 (UK 98) octane fuel. The two bases are about 5 minutes away from each other so it's no big deal to hit up Mildenhall for fuel.

Your car will fit just fine as long as you get a house with a driveway, or some other way of parking off the road. There are plenty of American SUV's that work just fine, your main problem will be parking.

You will not find any parts for the Camaro over here. There are some performance shops, but nothing like you are used to in the States.

Well I know where I will be getting gas from now. I'm guessing your military also, do the government still pay you back for road tax? I heard a rumor saying they don't anymore.

I really need to get my car re-tuned so I guess I will have to do it here. I will see if they can tune it for 94 octane.

You still get paid back for road tax, TV tax, you will be exempt from land council tax, and they still have the VAT free program.

The MOT checks emissions. I'm not sure what mods you have done to your car but I know that my truck (supercharged, cammed, LT headers w/ hi-flow cats) was twice the limit for the highest emissions bracket available.

I would definately pick up whatever you want before heading over here. I have been trying to get a supercharger over here, but the kits are too heavy to ship USPS. International shipping adds a 20% import tax.

Yes I am military, I work in AGE on the Flightline.

this is going to be fun, I have a cam, headers w/high flow cats, and exhaust. I will be working in supply, I get there in july…..you will see me around.

I heard another rumor from around the boards, that MOT is not needed for the first 3 years after production of your car.

"Applegarth", im pleased to see atleast 1 Camaro in the UK! Im british myself, lived in NW London. Where abouts your from mate?

Petrol prices are a killer in London! and trust me its hard to maintain an American vehicle in London.

Now im living in Kuwait and Camaro it is! plus the fuel price in Kuwait is peanuts!! lol

Applegarth 04-20-2011 02:13 PM

An MOT is not required for the first 3 years of the vehicle's life, however you will need to get an SVA done, which is basically an MOT that is good for 3 years. They need to make sure you do the light conversion right and all that. They will test your emissions so they can put you in a tax bracket.

Camaro_H, I am from New Mexico and have been in the UK for a couple years now. There are a handful of Camaros around the US Military installations, but less than 6 I believe. Petrol prices are pretty rough over here, currently around £1.30/litre....fortunately for us, US Military can purchase petrol on base for about $1.10/litre.

What do you do in Kuwait?

trudawg660 04-22-2011 12:10 AM

I will have to get a damn front plate holder, I'm going to find out that doesn't require you to drill in the bumper.

Applegarth 04-23-2011 12:24 AM

Mine is held on with zip ties and velcro. Though in my opinion, the worst part is cutting up the stock electrical wiring for the light conversion.

scites 05-15-2013 12:36 PM

hey guys, i am coming to mildenhall in june..what do i need to do for the light conversion? i was stationed there from 2000 to 2006 and headed back..just trying to get some ideas on what to do?

jules1200 05-15-2013 12:43 PM

All mine has is a rear fog light, which could be removed after if you want

scites 05-16-2013 09:48 AM

so just add a rear fog light and wire the rear fog and front driving lights to a toggle switch to be used as fog lights and i should be good to go?

jules1200 05-16-2013 10:40 AM

Don't think there is much else, that & side indicator repeaters. Mine has had some fitted on the wings (but I bought a used car) if I was doing it I would just wire up the front side marker lights as indicator flashers.

You can see mine here.
For the rear indicators, it still just has red lenses, but with amber bulbs in.

I found this info, if it helps.: http://www.import-car.info/modifications.shtml. Mildenhall auto centre is mentioned, so I guess they'll be able to get you sorted when you arrive at base.
