Bumped my key with my knee and shut my car off while driving!

I bumped my Key with my knee and shut my car off on accident and crashed into a stop sign.

So long story short, I was on my lunch break on my way home @ around 3am (I work at night) and was only going 25. I did not even realize anything until it was too late. I ended up with damage to my front fascia, 3/4 wheels, bent my lower control arm and broke my driver side headlight.

I was really embarrassed about it, as I had no idea that this was a safety issue at the time (June 1st). My wife made fun of me about it, and the guys at work couldn't believe that something like that could happen. I ended up starting to piece my car back together, buying the bumper pieces, a new headlight, and lower control arm etc. Rims are another story... This stuff gets pricey and I did not want to claim it on my insurance, so I am still in the midst of getting it fixed.

I already have a case open with GM, so they should cover the damage (hopefully). I am 6'2 and my knee sits almost perfectly with where my key is. If you guys have not gotten your key changed out, do so. I did this to my ZL1, and now have to fight with GM on who's fault it is and prove to them my case.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Wow, this for is the first time I heard an actual case before. I'm glad you're OK and good luck with getting reimbursed. Please keep us updated with your situation.

Sorry that happened to you.

I'm 6'2" as well and my knee is nowhere near the key when in driving position. Are you seated right on top of the steering wheel? Not bashing or making fun, just curious.

I'm calling BS!

All of a sudden the recall goes out and you crash your Camaro at 3am??

These cars have been on the road since spring of 09 and now it barely happens to someone?

:word: I'm 6'3" and have to do a roundhouse kick with my knee to get anywhere close to the key in the ignition. Impossible to do while wearing a seat belt unless you are trying to touch it.

I had no Idea, I didn't even hear about the recall until a couple of weeks ago. my knee is right under my key when I drive and if I move my leg at all I touch the FOB. Yes, 3am I was on my lunch break. I have had three Gen 5's and never had any issues before, I have had my knee touch the FOB several times but never shut the car off. You can call BS all you want, I am paying for everything out of pocket anyway until I find out from GM. I just want to make sure that everyone else is safe in the community and this does not happen to anyone else.

This is very odd.. it happened two months ago and you are just posting about it now? Well, I am glad no one was hurt - but I am also on the side of.. How far up is your seat pulled ?

Not me. I measured with a ruler-my knee is approximately 9" away from the fob

potterluck 08-04-2014 12:05 AM

See mine is not, I never move my seat, ever. Bare with me here, I have not taken to the dealership, and yes 2 months. I opened my case last week and I was embarassed as hell, so why would I post it any earlier. here is a video of where my knee sits and how easy it is to turn off (especially in cruise control). I had my foot on the gas pedal, so I could show you exactly where it was. I am not changing anything until the investigator comes out to do his thing. I am concious of the issue however and know where to keep my leg now. I am not try to get berated on here, or get anything out of this as I just want to let you guys know.

Ya. This guy must have the seat so jacked up his head is out of the sunroof to hit his knee on the key. I'm throwing out the flag like everyone else.
