$125 to update MyLink software?
 

The local Chevy dealer, Connell in Costa Mesa CA, wants $125 to update the MyLink software on my 2013 Camaro 2SS.

Considering that it will take them a total of maybe 20minutes, if we count the time to check in the car in, etc., that seems excessive even for a dealer.

How much have you paid?

Well I can tell you that my dealer updated mine for free and when I asked how much when they were done he said dealers don't charge for updates to software like that during the life of the warranty if not longer.

Whats the newest update available?

Flat rate based on time. Which in this case, sounds like a 1hr charge.

Where did you get the "20 minute" install time? The radio firmware update has been noted to take hours in some cases.

I would be tempted to update if it adds the guide lines to the backup camera

Not specifically part of the firmware. It's tied to the cameras used.

Just buy a new camera with the guidelines.

Since the guidelines move as you back up (not static), I assumed it was controlled by the mylink system, since you also control the proximity warnings that show up on the backup camera through mylink.

Has anyone done this - replaced the camera itself to get the guidelines to work (i.e. with a 2015 OEM backup camera)?

You are right, its not in the camera from 2014 to the 2015, but in 15 the lines are back.

I suppose it can take two hours if the tech has no idea what he is doing and needs to go buy a memory stick, etc.

Assuming that is not the case, and that the dealership has a good internet connection (I'll grant you that these are big assumptions), it should take a maximum of 10 minutes to find the correct package and load it on the memory stick, and a maximum of five minutes to walk to the car and start the the upgrade process.

The time for the actual upgrade will be variable, depending on the update size and the current state of the current firmware in the car; it could be a minute, it could be longer, but it is all unattended.

About 1 minute after that to verify that the version was applied and you are done.

In any case, $125 to upgrade on a less than two year old car, from a dealership I've bought a lot of stuff from, seems steep....

I wouldn't expect to get ANYTHING done at the dealer for less than $100

Yes, it is unattended. But you are billed for the install time, not the time a tech is actually sitting in your car.

There are several threads here noting that the update (ie: installation time) took hours.

I'm not saying the dealerships aren't overcharging. I was merely stating how the system works. If you ask, they will likely even tell you the same thing. The dealers use a guide (I forget the name) which lists an average time it takes to complete a repair and that is how you are billed. Doesn't matter if the job is completed quicker or slower.

In any case, I agree with you. Just stating how the system works.
