pulled over for a dumb reason

so i was coming up over a hill on a state road going 50mph in a 40 as i topped the hill i passed a state trooper then after i went abt 400 yards he turned on his lights so i pulled over knowing he didnt clock me bc my radar dector did not go off. I could of easily ran considering the time it took him to pull out but i didnt bc it was not worth it knowing that he didnt clock me but when he walked up he told me the reason he pulled me over was for having a tinted licence plate cover? he said it was illegal to have one and that i needed to take it off. has anyone ever heard of this being illegal? i havnt....

I've heard it, not supposed to have anything covering it

RedJewel2SS 01-16-2010 01:21 PM

yea the plates have to be visible from a certain distance. it's like the head lights and taillights, they cannot be tampered with!

it's illegal in IL too....not tinted, clear, illuminated, nothing can go on your plates

it's a good rule tho, t's for the times cops just nap a picture and send you a bill...that cant happen if something is blocking the view...i hope they were nice enuff to give u a warning tho...if not, that's :bs:

It is a law in every state that your plate "identification" not be obstructed in any way. The officer has the discretion to write a citation or make you remove the obstruction. I hope you only recieved a warning.

^^^ what he said about Illinois. Of course every state is different, be best to check your local laws.

tinted license plate cover--- yeah that kinda defeats the entire purpose of having plates on your car.

So you would've ran if you thought he actually clocked you?

He just wanted to see your car so he used the uncommon and legal (but rarely used) way of pulling you over.

Xmicro_SS 01-16-2010 05:48 PM

Yep, Illegal in NY as well for at least the last 20 years.
