Gas Milage?

Hey Guys,

Question:
What was the gas milage of the 1987 Camaro RS?

Engine Size: 2.8 Liters (173 Cubic Inches)
Milage: (?)
Transmission: Manual
Horsepower: 135 RWHP (Correct info?)

I get about 21 MPG in my 91 RS, it has a 305 in it. I would assume that the V6 would probably get a little better.

MrCool 11-16-2009 11:28 PM

How would you rate it on performance? 0-60? Top speed? ect?

irocnroll 11-17-2009 01:12 PM

Fairy quick off the line. I've never pushed it to see how fast it could go. If you are looking for something quick I would look at the Iroc's with the 5.7L 350's. I cant imagine a 2.8 would be too quick.

You get 21mpg out of that 305? i assume you mean highway mileage.

Nope, I try to keep off of the highways. Its kept mostly to back roads. I baby it, and never lay into it. Its used only on sunny days and for car cruises. I reset the trip meter after every fill up and calculate the milage. It almost always averages 21.

In my opinion the 2.8 was too undersized for the car and actually got worse mileage in actual use than the V8... I would steer clear of any of the 2.8 cars, the only good V6 Camaros (until now) were the 3.8 Buick engines...they were great.

That is very possible, my buddies bone stock 89 with the 305 gets about 22mpg on the highway... not driving very sanely either. Better than my 11mpg 305 that is in desperate need of a tune.

2.8s are junk.... for the 3rd gens the 3.1 is better and gets about 22-23mpg. the 2.8s are notorious for #5 rod bearings blowing apart.

my brother had an 84 Firebird with the 305 throttle body inection. I think it had about 55-60 thousand miles on it. He got about 11mpg in the city.
I had two 350 IROC-Z's. I got 17 in the city with the 2.77 rear axle, and 16 with the 3.23 axle. I could get 25mpg on the highway at 55, but at the usual 65-75 highway driving i'd get 23.

I've had a couple 2.8 thirdgens, both with manual transmissions. I averaged about 18mpg with them both.

I get about 18-19mpg out of my TPI 305 5-speed 88 GTA, and I got about the same milage out of my 85 IROC when it had the stock TPI 305 & 700R4.

The way that things are working out, I might be getting an abandoned 1987 RS with 2.8 Liters. I know it's not a 350, but is it worth trying to do anything performance wise to the car?

Supercamaro64 11-19-2009 06:59 PM

iv got an 86 with the 2.8 in it, and it gets low 20s, high teens. depends on wat kind of driving. and its not too bad off the line, its still a light car, with or without the small engine. iv had mine into the low 100s , and it hadnt peaked yet, but i was running out of road lol. iv given plenty of ppl a run for their money tho lol

p.s. they are NOT junk.

I wouldnt bother bolting on mods to a a 2.8. If you plan on buying this car for performance, look into finding a 350 at least to drop into it. Its easy to swap out if you have the tools to do it.
