Over heating?

I have a 2011 Camaro v-6, 6sp manual transmission. The over heating engine light came on. I noticed the temp gauge went up, ultimately all the way up to the H. Interestingly, the temperature kept fluctuating from normal to high. There is no evidence of any steam coming from the engine compartment and no smell. I also notice the cooling fans coming on and staying on after the engine was off. Any ideas what is causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

so you shut the car off and the fan is still running

Yes, after shutting off the car, I noticed both fans running for several minutes

Any modifications done? Have you checked your coolant level? Miles on the car?

Only mod is a K&N air intake and a magnaflo exhaust. Has 54,300 miles. I did check the coolant level and found it to be low. It took about 3/4 of a jug of antifreeze

Sounds like low coolant was the issue. Check for leaks. The fans running after shutoff seem to be a safety feature to try to cool the engine. Hopefully it isn't a plugged tube.

Problem didn't go away. After adding the antifreeze, I went for a ride and it's still occurring. Could it be the thermostat?

Do you have any CEL codes?

You probably need to burp the coolant system since you had to add 3/4 of a jug.

Yep, I learned that one a few years ago. Let the air out

Still sounds like low coolant. You need to add coolant directly to the radiator, not the surge tank.

Let the car cool off, then take off the radiator cap. Fill the radiator to the top. Run the engine with the cap off until coolant begins to circulate. This will allow any trapped air to escape, making room for more coolant. Add coolant again and put the cap back on.

Now having said all that, why was your coolant low? You should get under the car and look for leaks.

No, no codes

I agree about burping the air out, then try to id where it went!

Inspect you vehicle for leaks, especially the water pump.
