Elite Catch Can FULL of OIL at 2500km!!

Well I almost had a heart attach, upon first laying my eyes on this :confused0068:

Camaro Dude 10-20-2013 12:25 PM

The pictures above demonstrate how much oil was collected 2500km(1553 miles) later. I installed it approximately when the odometer was reading its first 800km(497 miles). Oil change was done with Mobil 1 5w-30 at around 1500km(932 miles) mark if memory serves right, so some of that oil in there is the factory oil.

I took 3 pictures because I was OBSESSED trying to figure out if it I allowed the oil to reach a too high level, and not allowing the oil to drain properly, perhaps even backing up :eyebulge:!

I took a ruler out, and I think there were 2mm to spare before there would be no more room left for oil top drain in the can.

I'd like to hear your feedback on all this!

Is this amount of oil normal?

Does it look like I maxxed the can out?

That's an excessive amount of oil. I drive my car very hard and I have never been anywhere near that. Something is wrong IMO. How did you break the car in? That has a lot to do with blowby, but either way that seems too much at 1600 miles.

Here is mine at 1700 miles (just ran out and took these)

My car 2013 1LE had an Elite can on it at maybe 800 miles and I've MAYBE got 2.5 oz since then.

I emptied it at 1500 miles when I changed out the factory oil. Followed it up at 5000 miles next oil change and measured just shy of 2 oz. Maybe 1/2"-3/4" of oil in the bottom of the can.

You sir have something wrong with either the can install or the motor itself. Is the motor consuming oil?

Stop using that garbage Mobile1!

Switch to a better oil like amsoil and see the difference.

When I put Mobil in my Ls1 I would use 2 qts in 3k miles. I switched to Quaker state 10/30 and it would stop.

I usually agree with you, but in this case I somewhat disagree. I agree there are better oils, in fact next oil change I am changing to Pennzoil platinum. But my pics are with M1 and I have no oil loss at all and very little in my catch can. With that said I drove my car like I stole it off that lot which I believe has a lot to do with it, more so then the actual oil.

I think we agree that ring seating during the initial break in period is very important and improper ring seating can lead to excesses blow by.

FWIW, I drive my vehicle hard, meaning I gave it the same break-in procedure as any car of mine in the past. You guys know which procedure I'm referring to, no redlining, but hard acceleration to 4500 rpm the first 1000km.....

To answer the above question if the engine is consuming oil, well I just checked the oil dipstick, car sitting all week. It is slightly above at the half way point, but let's call it half. Oil was replaced with the (as the gentleman aptly put it with the garbage Mobil 1 oil) at 1500km(932 miles) mark, and now it reads 3700km (2299 miles), so thats 2200km (1367 miles) since the last oil change.

The amount of oil we see in the catch can is not all that consistent with what I'm observing on the oil dipstick right now. I would of thought that it would have been a lower reading considering the amount of oil in that catch can?!

Could this mean it burned quite a bit during the break in stage as I was kicking it and now it has suddenly levelled off?

More data collection will surely answer my questions, but one thing is for sure. Anyone who questions that a catch can is not needed at all, because a stock (as the engineers intended cough...cough) car is the best, need think again.

Again FWIW, I'm performing an oil change with Amsoil 5W30 Signature Series and their oil filter this week, before I put the car away for the winter in a few short weeks.

It's a shame you won't have a chance (due to weather) to drive it a couple thousand miles and monitor the oil situation. You may have to go straight to the dealer come the spring...

I have the elite can as well. Initially I was catching a lot too. It's slowed down since.

I'd like to know more about this also as I'm having the same thing with my catch can.

All motors are different bud. Lots of Ls1's back in the day were fine with it. Not mine lol. So I had to switch and it worked. It's a suggestion he could try and he could get back to us.

Camaro Dude 10-20-2013 01:19 PM

I will do an engine oil analysis when I drain it next week.
Sadly, I won't be allowed to log much more on the new oil Amsoil fill, due to weather, unless of course winter arrives late. I stop driving it the day I see one grain of salt on the road.

I might get lucky, weather has been weird and unpredictable last few years.

Very very curious now what the end game to all this will be.

Two cars I owned in the 90's with Quaker State blew up! I'll never put that stuff in my car again. Seems like they dropped off the map for about a decade and now it's back. I didn't think anyone was buying it!

mlee 10-20-2013 01:37 PM

My Elite only had a couple ounces each oil change but I have a buddy with the same problem as you.

I'd really like to know the answer to this one too.
