Stock rims repaint or powder coat?
2 Attachment(s)
I bought this car used a while back and checking from the pictures online i see the stock ZL1 rims to be more glossy then my current ones. If i have to get the same gloss back, should i repaint the rims or get them powder coated? I dont think there would be any powder coating shop where i live so would the paint sustain the high heat from the brakes etc?

Attaching my rims picture and the pictures i see online for reference.

Factory new there painted, they are actually satin not glossy and a repaint would be better than powder coating because of the heat used on them.

On my '13 ZL1, I had my OEM wheels powder coated gloss black. It was this post on the Porsche forums from David Schardt at Forgeline that made me decide on powder coating over painting.

Powder coat if done correctly is a superior finish than paint. It resist chemicals, scratches and chipping far better than paint. If done correctly as well, it does not impact the strength or structure of the wheel. 100% of our racing team customers run powder coated wheels and love the durability and easy clean up of the finish.
On the other side of that, we powder coat all of our product in-house and have complete control of the process. If you take your wheels to a finisher that does not do wheels on a regular basis, then you take your chances. Stick with wheel finishers such as Wheel Medic here in Ohio or Wheels America who has locations all over the country.

My only caution going with a gloss finish is that it will readily show scratches and swirls in direct light.

The wheels from factory are painted and are NOT glossy. The ones you pictured are someone's wheels that they had re-done in a gloss finish. I had my stock wheels powdercoated at a 30% gloss and it is almost a perfect match to stock black.

Powder coating is MUCH more durable than paint and looks just as good if done right.

IF you go with powdercoating it's all about finding someone who knows what they're doing. I've had 2 sets of wheels done. One set still looks as fresh as the day I picked them up. The other set had the clear peeling after one year. They were done by two different coaters and it's all about the prep work.

i searched around and there is no good powder coating facility in my city. Guess i would be repainting them soon.

Did you ever clean them up???
