Cam choice?

As of now i have cai, ported tb, long tubes no cats, x pipe and axle back. 2010 ls3. I was looking at gpi ss2 and ss3 cam kits but not sure which to go with. I only drive the car when its nice out and mostly just beat on it. Im not looking for dyno numbers, i want the real world power!!!

SS3.....A member on here broke into the 10's on that cam

URDAMAN 05-14-2017 11:03 AM

If you really want real world comparisons, smaller cam vs larger cam, side by side race, go to youtube, and you should find SS1 vs SS2 or perhaps SS2 vs SS3, or SS1 vs SS3, I forget lol.

You will see how a smaller cam pulls away first at road legal speeds, but the larger cam pulls away once you hit freeway speeds and higher.

Hope that helps a bit.

I just asked a similar question, emailed gpi. They talked me into the ss3 over the 2. Talked to PSJ on here too and it sounds like it's fine for daily driving. Gotta get a pretty expensive torque converter to run it tho

Yes sir, hopefully putting it on tomorrow

camrytt 05-15-2017 06:25 AM

Damn that's a lot of stuff! Can't wait to see the end result

Drillteamleader 05-15-2017 01:37 PM

Picking up a used set of heads that i will do a little home porting on, and yes i have done several port jobs. It might not be as good as the pros, but it is free hp!!!. Then i will put my stockers on an lq4 build im doing.

Pro Stock John 05-15-2017 01:41 PM

I drive mine every day.

I did the tsp vvt 2 as my first cam and always wanted more power. Ended up adding the ss4 last summer since gpi didn't have a line out back then. Go bigger cause you'll def want more power

Drillteamleader 05-15-2017 04:32 PM

My main question between cams was more depending on that have the 6 speed. Since launching these cars is such a pain in the ass. It would be nice to be able to put 15's and slicks on, but im not going to spend that kind of money for that.

More power yes, but I know plenty who wanted to go smaller cam again, as the shaking at idle becomes old at times. Dare I even say, a bit out of character, on a modern day design of a car.

URDAMAN 05-15-2017 08:10 PM

Well...ask yourself why a cam in the first place then? Just go Fi from the jump. Regardless of what cam you decide, the cost for labor is the same; so why go mediocre. I have both an L99 and a c6 with an ls3 one is cammed the other procharged with the correct supporting mods and driver mod you can get it to hook. Practice, tuning and finding the sweet spot.

Drillteamleader 05-15-2017 08:21 PM

My labor is free. I do all my own work. Cam is way cheaper than boost

URDAMAN 05-15-2017 08:25 PM

Sweet..what are your car goals?

Drillteamleader 05-16-2017 09:09 AM

To go fast duh!!! No real goals at all, i just get bored and need to improve power on something. Porting these heads should keep me busy for a while!

ecreps 05-16-2017 04:08 PM

No experience with GPI, I've been very happy with my tsp 235/239 setup. I'm sure youll be happy with GPI, but I would go big especially given how you use the car.

If you're having a hard time deciding on a cam then you can email patrick guerra from the guerra group in victoria, TX. He specs a lot of cams for ls cars mostly in the houston area but he's spec'd cams for a few folks in here too. He knows his stuff and is real good at it, a great tuner too. You can email him and tell him what you want and he'll spec you a great cam. Just an idea if you're indecisive on what cam to go with

I catch your drift, but technically, this is not accurate.

Some cams require more "supporting mods".

On one the end of the spectrum, you have "drop-in" cams..

Also, supporting mods for a 21x/22x cam, should not have to be as intensive, as say for a 23x/24x.

Supporting mods=more labour

Drillteamleader 05-19-2017 12:42 PM

I went with the ss3. I should be starting my port work next week. Hope to have it all done cam and head swap by next weekend.

URDAMAN 05-19-2017 05:28 PM

Great choice, let us know how you like it
