z/28 for 2016 news

this was posted on gminsidenews The Good News: Z/28 Will Return. The Bad????????????

I'll tell you guys something, getting info on the 6th generation Camaro has been tough. GM has been so tight on this, that their shoes squeak when they walk. But over the past few months I've been able to piece together a few tidbits.

It looks like the Z/28 will return in 6th gen guise. That's the good news. The news that maybe I'm not so thrilled about is that it appears that the Z/28 will take a page out of the C7 Z06 playbook. That being, supercharged V8, wide body, lots of aero doo-dads.

I was really hoping for a purer representation of the Z/28 paradigm.

Is this what we REALLY want the Z/28 to be? Didn't we already go through this with the 5th gen Z28 -------> ZL1?

I cant agree more withe how well GM has kept this secret. There were all types of leaked images of the gen5 concept and clay models. Even the C7 had some parts leaked such as the front bumper. The only thing we've seen are the camo test cars. They are even keeping the reveal tight lipped.

All we know is it will be lighter and share some goodies from the ZL1, most likely mag suspension for the SS. The Z/28 needs an NA engine though so I'm curious to know if GM has an answer to that, I would assume yes but again no leaks of any other NA V8s that I'm aware of.

The entire thread on GM Inside New is based on this (below). Nothing to support

Jalopnik is also floating that the CTS-V will be 640 HP. That assertion is also supported by nothing

Seems unlikely the next gen z28 will become a zl1.. Why not just keep the zl1 a zl1, and the z28 a z28?

That's my thread guys, not sure if the management is okay with linking to it or not, so I'll just leave it. It's starting to look to me like the the ZL1 will go away and the Z/28 will be LT4 equipped, kind of like the ZR1 and Z06 were combined into the C7 Z06.

I really feel that the Z/28 requires a free revving, normally aspirated motor. Something to compete with the GT350's flat plane 5.2L. Let's call it around 525 horsepower.

There is nothing to power both a ZL1 and Z/28 with GM only developing the LT1 and LT4. I would rather see the Z/28 die off again then change like the Z06 did.

Me too.. It would suck to have the next z28 be supercharged.

But, what makes you think GM has nothing but LT1' and 4's?

Considering how many LS versions came out, it is not unlikely we will se more performance oriented LT engines.

Right now, GM has LT1 and LT4 and SS and Z/28 in the pipeline......

The LS series started with the LS1/6 at 5.7 liters, then the LS2 at 6.0 liters, then the LS7 at 7.0 liters, then the LS9/A at 6.2 liters and the LS3 at 6.2 liters.

The LT1 and LT4 skipped right to 6.2 liters so there won't be any displacement changes for the gen 5 small block.

I would like to believe that GM/Chevrolet will keep the Z/28 naturally aspirated. Chevrolet, I strongly believe, has always been about heritage when it came to the Z/28 (not Z28). It's been built as a track car in the 60s, and that's why they brought it back in it's form today. High horsepower numbers are useless to a vehicle, unless you can physically handle it. To ME, the Z/28 exemplifies track capability and has beaten cars, with way more horsepower, on the track already. So, we will have a supercharged Camaro, the ZL1, and hopefully be the new horsepower king. And we will have our track star, the Camaro Z/28. Pretty please....with sugar on top.

Well, keep in mind that the ZL1 was going to be the Z28. If it wasn't for the whining and complaining and bitching by people like us to GM, about the heritage of a 4200 pound, supercharged Camaro carrying the hallowed Z/28 emblem - it would have been. And then as a bonus we ALSO got a REAL Z/28, (almost too REAL some say ).

So...my advice is, if you believe the next Z/28 should have a free revving, naturally aspirated, smallblock, one that can put the hurt on the GT350's flat plane 5.2 - then get you cards and letters in. It worked on the 5th gen......

I have a feeling that the ZL1 almost became the Z/28 because they couldn't use the LS7. When the C6 ended and they no longer needed the LS7, it became available for the Camaro.

I still believe there will be a C6 ZL1 with the LT4. The Z/28 I think should replace the 1LE and give it more options for people that have more money to spend, like carbon brakes and trick shocks. The LT1 is a pretty high tech engine and easily has another 100Hp to be had from it. These are just my guesses.

Actually, I'd be fine with SS, merging 1LE into Z/28 and having a GT350(R) competitor and an LT4 ZL1.
