EDMUNDS: Pssst...Roll Out the Camaros!

DETROIT - Funny thing about spending time at the Detroit Auto Show the day following the "official" media days: some of the displays changed a little.

Including the heavily sinister - and definitely non-eco-looking - Chevrolet Camaro "Black" concept, an unhumble homage to muscle car-ness that debuted at last fall's Specialty Equipment Marketers Association in the days just before "bailout" and "bankruptcy" forced out horsepower and torque in the industry's headlines - and Detroit reluctantly assumed a more contrite demeanor.

The Camaro Black and a couple more politically volatile Camaros that hunkered prominently on Tuesday in the reconfigured General Motors Corp. display definitely were not occupying said space during the Detroit auto show's two days reserved for media - when too many uncontrolled cameras and caption writers could have been pointed towards those menacing hoods and whale-size wheels.

Which makes us wonder if GM would have altered its plan to roll out the Camaros if the company had more advance notice that Bob Corker, the Tennessee Senator who so famously berated the Big Three CEOs during their D.C. bailout visit, was winging in for a stroll around the show floor.

Luckily for Detroit, Corker evidently was too mobbed by foaming-mouthed reporters to spot the gas slurpers that symbolize the can't-forget-the-Sixties business mindset so many believe is largely responsible for bringing Detroit to the brink.

Then again, the gaudy enclave of Challengers and Vipers pole-dancing at the Chrysler display apparently also failed to injure the Tennessee Senator's sensibilities, seeming to indicate Corker is more concerned about ensuring United Auto Workers laborers end up drawing down the same kind of wages he pays his pool boy than he is in meaningfully analyzing the Big Three's product portfolio.

The menacing Camaro Black concept car - the antithesis of what legislators insist Detroit should be building - wisely didn't break cover at the Detroit auto show until the majority of press cameras were gone.

EDIT: Story pulled from Edmunds, link removed from post.

This dude sounds like he has one of a couple of issues:
* Camaro envy
* Hemroids
* It's his time of the month
* His Prius is in the shop
* He's just a real PITA

What an a-hole. Where's the stats on the kind of MPGs these cars get?

Isn't the "Camaro Black" a V6 also?

So not sure this statement belongs with it...maybe the LS7 Camaro...but not Camaro Black...

Why'd the author have to ruin a pefectly good opportunity for drooling over the Camaros...and mention f'n Corker. :rolleyes:

I'm pretty sure the Black is a V6, but he's just saying that the car doesn't LOOK eco-friendly, and it's paying homage to the 60s, which Corker would have a stroke about.

This man should be shot, that is a 300 hp v6 with very good gas milage and hes complaining. He should be deported to China.
Sorry for the lil rant

Makes sense...

JMAN311 01-15-2009 03:17 PM

Yeah that guy obviously didn't do his homework talking crap about a 300hp V6 car that gets 27mpg like it's some kinda gas guzzler.

The bigger problem is that some people will read it (gullible people) and assume that the car is a gas guzzer, when in reality it actually gets good mileage and has a ton of power.

Justin 01-15-2009 03:30 PM

He wasn't talking crap about it. The article was satire, poking fun at Corker's being there because he would make the argument "Well, this car doesn't look eco-friendly at all!" even though it is and "It's exactly the problem with GM! All they can do is look backwards!"

The article was basically saying that Corker is a douchebag, and he had to deal with scathing reporters because of it, and that he needs to get his head out of his ass.

tsg1391 01-15-2009 03:57 PM

i dont see it as him doggin on the camaro, rather doggin on corker pretty much saying the only reason he gave the big 3 hell is because the union workers are the people who are going to re-elect him, and that he doesnt really care about the cars getting bad mpg

fbodfather 01-15-2009 04:17 PM

**sound of Fbodfather being pulled off the ceiling -- kinda like velcro**

BULL!...........

The Camaro Black and a Silver 1LT with RS have been in the Chevy Exhibit since Sunday morning - BEFORE -- (let me repeat that last word...)

BEFORE

....the very first press event........in fact, they were there on the Friday before.........

On TUESDAY morning, we put the Camaro SS/RS on the floor ONCE WE REMOVED THE STAGING that encroached on the Chevy Exhibit..............

MOREOVER -- the Camaro Black is a V6 -- that's "the 21st century sports coupe that gets 27mpg" --

.........so how can he say that we're being irresponsible????

This article is completely irresponsible.....

Now -- ask me how I REALLY feel.................

Sorry for the lil rant

I second that motion..

fbodfather 01-15-2009 04:22 PM

oh ...and for the record -- I was playing "bodyguard" to the various cars and trucks while Corker was looking at them.......(and keeping the media at bay...)

Trust me -- the Camaros were there -- GLARING at the Senator (and everyone else...)
