Stop the Drone - Helmholtz Style

If you don't like the 1800 to 2000 RPM drone, here is a method that stops it without buying a whole new exhaust system. IT WORKS!

Here are the calculations:

Looks like the V6 fix

orange-prince 08-23-2010 05:39 PM

what the hell is this !!!

brandotron 08-23-2010 05:39 PM

Wat.

Is the end of that U shaped pipe capped, or is it basically a "hidden" exhaust outlet?

Roger Ramjet 08-23-2010 05:48 PM

It is similar to the V6 fix but shorter. And, the pipe is capped.

omegaman 08-23-2010 06:21 PM

cool fix. A secondary resonator 'kill' tube. where the drone goes to die.

Congratulations, Roger, for thinking outside the box!

It worked before, and will work, again.

Yeah it works! The GM Engineers designed the stock mufflers with a Helmholtz chamber! You just reinvented the stock 2010 Camaro V8 Muffler! See cutaway pic below.

I believe Solo uses these on some G8 applications.

I believe GM does too. ;)

This is going to be the next big exhaust mod on this site.

That's the L99 muffler, right?

You're kidding, right? Why waste the time, effort, and money when you can pick up stock L99 mufflers for next to nothing. IMO, the better, cheaper, and more efficient way is to simply add an $85 mufflered x-pipe to replace the H-pipe. It will help reduce drone when coupled with rear mufflers and you won't lose flow like you will with the u-bend.

Congrats to the OP on the craftsmanship, it looks like you did a good job.
