Who Makes Good Micrometers These Days?
 

I'm looking to purchase some outside micrometers. I'm old school so I don't necessarily need digital ones. Back in the day quality ones were made by Starrett and Mitutoyo but I'm out of touch with what is decent today.

Any suggestions so I don't make a bad purchase for a precision tool?

There are many good ones but the two you mentioned are still top notch.

Both you mention are very good. Browne & Sharp make great measuring tools also.

We use Starrett and B & S at work. Both very good.

Starrett is still a quality product.

Just got me a new set of micrometers.

Ive been a machinist by trade for the last 14 years. Starrett is good but kinda expensive for what they are, mitutoyo makes a good set. I personally use brown and Sharpe for all my measuring tools, but my shop uses all three brands daily. You can't really go wrong with any of those. Spi makes ok sets. But it depends on how much you want to spend and how often you plan on using them. For occasional use, spi isn't bad at all. But if you are going to use them daily,I would stick with brown and Sharpe. mitutoyo or starrett.

It really depends on your needs and use... If you only need to use the tools 2-3 times per year for checking brake rotors, even harbor freight stuff seems to work well. If you require real precision for measuring critical components and clearances, I liked my experiences with Starret or Mitutoyo.

That being said I have been using a chinese digital caliper that finally died after 5 years in a damp basement, it did a great job for my needs until recently and I got my moneys worth from it. I only measure brake rotors at home... Not really a high precision job.

Mitutoyo is what our millwrights and machinists use daily. Great tools. We calibrate regularly as well.
