16x20 garage build questions
Hey everyone. I'm going to be having a garage built very soon and I need some input. It has been brought up that I might want to build the walls using 2x6s instead of 2x4s due to the fact that I will be able to better insulate. Can anyone provide insight on this? Has anyone had any success doing it this way? Is going the conventional 2x4 good enoug as going with 2x6 will increase cost.
Thanks in advance and I'm sure more questions will come up. I'm just at the beginning stage and almost ready to submit for my permit. |
I would first check with the building code office to see which is required. Also if they have to be on 16" or 24" centers. Also make it a little bigger that is kind of small. It will fill up faster with stuff than you think.
Mark out a section 16x24 where your going to build it and and park your car in it. This will give you some idea the room in it once the car is in it. |
Thanks Spike. 2x4 on 16 centres is required by code, I assume 2x6 would just be going over the limit lol. I don't have tons of room to go much bigger. My shelter I had the car in the last couple of years was 20x10. So I no my length of 20' is good and the car is less then 7' wide. So potentially I could fit 2 cars in the 16' width. But I do realize that the 16x20 is outside dimensions and it will be smaller on the inside.

Unless you plan on heating/cooling the space year round then it's a waste of money for a garage. Yes it insulates better and you can get a higher R-value insulation but do you really need it with a non-heated garage? I don't think you'll really care if it's a smoking hot -5 Celsius instead of a chilly -7 Celsius.

Garage
You will never recover the initial expense in saved heating or cooling energy.

I would agree that it is not worth it, use that money to make it larger. I assume it will not be climate controlled 24/7?

It also depends on how tall the main walls are. For example, here if it is over 12' it has to be 2x6.
|
Thanks for the responses. Put my permit in with the 2x6 build. Figured it would be better long term. Going with 10' walls. Will be insulated and heated in winter. Not going to cool it in the summer though.

You will still notice a temp difference in summer with better insulation the garage will stay cooler than outside we pretty much have same weather im close to lake ontario

Ready for concrete. I no it looks like it’s not level but it was fixed a bit more after the picture was taken.

Started building today. Thought I had enough wood and OSB board but I guess not. Also ran out of daylight anyways.
