155mph speed limiter

Can someone please tell me how to eliminate the 155 mph limiter in my vert?

155 Limiter? First time I've heard of this, is it only in the convertibles? Had my Old SS Coupe at 153. Have yet to fully open up my ZL1 and it better Not be Limited

redleader 04-27-2013 04:53 AM

Get rated Tyres!
I freaked at 137 :-(
#V6

Scarrzz 04-27-2013 05:21 AM

Dude, my old '83 Lincoln Town Car would do that.

These cars are made for stability at speed. Be careful and choose a good road on a good day with no traffic, but going fast is OK, really. Don't freak, just enjoy. =]

Only the soft tops are limited, for safety reasons.

Convertibles only.

From what little info I found on the topic, the Safety concern is really a business decision. I read somewhere that the tops were simply not tested for the higher top speed of the ZL1 over the SS. It seems to me the convertible has several SS traits. This tells me that GM chose to limit their cost by keeping the convertible within the already analyzed bounds of the SS. We do the same thing where I work.

With a tune, it will keep accelerating till blows up! Now, that's high quality FUN!

I would still keep the rev limiter (unless I mod the engine).

dcoates18481 04-27-2013 10:41 AM

My 2010 was limited to 155.
You have to tune it out. Now it goes faster than that :)

The coupes have no limiter from the factory, and will go plenty fast.

TripleBlkZL1 04-27-2013 11:53 AM

wait wait... So the verts don't have PTM and their limted to 155mph? That's messed up lol.. I took mine up to 170 when she was stock.. She had a lot more in her!

cvp33 04-27-2013 12:36 PM

187mph in my last car was deadly quiet and tracked completely straight.........I just ran out of man marbles. At nearly 300' per second you don't have a lot of room for error. Back on topic though, and seriously a concern, at what speed with the convertible top just peel itself away from the car or possibly be damaged in some way?

Lot of threads on this topic, but actually yes the coupes (and verts) are limited to 155, barring a tune. Zl1 coupes are not. The main reason is above 155 the front end begins to lift, they changed that with the zl1 coupe hence no longer speed limited.

If he said stock, must be the ZL1.

TripleBlkZL1 04-27-2013 03:02 PM

Sorry I didn't read his post right. I thought he wrote that the couple ZL1's were limited

That's what I thought haha. no worries

TripleBlkZL1 04-27-2013 03:42 PM

I had a 2010 SS coupe and was devastated when I found out it was limited

DarkneZZ 04-27-2013 04:57 PM

2013 2LT/RS has a 145mph limiter. Tested.

Trentin24 04-27-2013 05:37 PM

2010 1LT has a 118 limiter. Tested
Due to the tires

Seeing this is the ZL1 area, and the topic was ZL1 Verts, My statement needed no correction about the coupes had no limiter from the factory.

Who ever is saying that only verts are limited is wrong, I have a 2012 SS coupe and I hit 155mph n got the "speed limited" to 155 mph but yes u can get a tune to remove the speed governor. Now 155mph wasn't fast enough for me so I tuned it n so far I've hit 168mph but I was running out of road so I had to start slowing down after that. Now on the ZL1 yes verts are limited and coupes are not, just adding my 2cents

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ZL1 VERTS, AND ZL1 COUPES ONLY. You guys keep bringing up stuff about the SS, that should be done in the SS section and not here.

Relax lol and :word: at the same time. I've had my Z coupe upto 160 stock. Here's my question, on a Z vert would the Pillars be able to hold up to that kind of stress from all the air pressure against the front glass?

From a safety point though and whether or not the top is up, you guys roll that thing at higher speeds you have no chance of walking away. Albeit rolling it at 155 I still don't know if one could walk away. Personally and in my own opinion I think it was a good call by GM to limit the vert to that.

That is where the limiter used to kick in on my bike. Installed a timing retard eliminator. Now HP is the limit.

155 1/2.

Vangres 04-28-2013 10:21 AM

I ran a 97 SS vert -Mods mainly was engine and suspension- back in 1999 to 170 mph (I stayed on that speed for a whole minute, don't ask me where I did this), the air pressure sounds around the front wind shield was the main reason I didn't go further, after that run I didn't have any structure damage to the top.
Which makes me think that C5 vert should have a better structural integrity than C4 vert, since it's 15 years later..
Otherwise if its the same I would say don't go over 160 mph in a vert because the sounds alone are scary enough.

I'm guessing either the flats on 95 or that section way out west on 90?

No, I was somewhere in Utah, leaving it at that (was a road trip from L.A. to Boston).

I'm itching to do that again.

niterat 04-29-2013 09:43 PM

So I would need a tune. Thanks to those that answered my question.
thanks to the rest who added info or entertainment!
