Eating Fuel

Has anyone seen an average of more than 20mpg,from their SS.
No matter how much 'coasting' i do,i have never seen a higher figure than 19.8mpg.
I drove a return trip from Germany which was 310 miles,at an average speed of 82mph,that gave me a return of 15.8mpg.Thats to be expected, but i have seen what seem to be,some wildly exaggerated claims on here and can get nowhere near them.
Have i got a hole in my Petrol tank!?

I've never gotten mileage that low on the freeway, even when I drove her home from the dealership. I've gotten as low as 18 and am now hovering just under 20 with less than 1000 miles.

This is also with me changing gears every few miles between 5th and 6th on the freeway because I'm still breaking in the engine. I expect it to jump more when I can just leave it in 6th.

I drive mainly city streets with a couple connecting highways. In a V6 I don't even get 20mpg (I'm at 19.5 right now). But most SS's I've heard mentioned drive right about 20mpg. Which means if I had one, I'd probably be hitting 17.5 or so.

Slow your speed on the highway... Even though the 6.2L doesn't have to work hard (est. 2k RPMs) doing 82mph, try resetting your MPG display and set cruise to 70mph in 6th.

Unfortuneately,my family complains about the drone in the Cab if i drive in 6th for too long,so invariably i find myself in 5th,which as we well know is fine, especially on our small roads in England.

You bought a SS and you are complaining about fuel mileage?

It's like reading truck owners complaining about fuel mileage.

You should have gotten the V6.

Well then there's another problem. Driving constantly in 5th gear means more RPMs and more fuel eaten up. If you want to improve on that, you're going to want to change a few things. I went from 18 in 5th gear high speed to 19.5 in 6th gear at lower speeds.

I've got a 2SS/RS M6. 36+mile R/T commute, 23 stop lights each direction. I'm getting 21+ and 26+ highway driving. Even if I downshift alot, accelerate a little heavier, I still get 19+ city MPH.. No complaints from me. Using 93 octane. Got 8,000 miles on mine.

SS Man 08-28-2010 08:30 PM

I consistantly get 20 with 50/50 highway and city driving on my 2SS manual. I did a road trip of about 100 miles all highway and took it real easy and it got 28 mpg. Something doesn't sound right with yours, take it to the dealer.

snowtrill 08-28-2010 08:48 PM

Are you using 93 octane? If you are using lower octane along with driving in 5th all the time I can see how your gas mileage would be lower.

Fiftydriver 08-28-2010 08:51 PM

My L99 gets around 20 mpg in town and around 24 mpg average on the highway on 91 octane fuel, best we have around these parts.

Black69 08-28-2010 09:38 PM

My LS3 gets around 18.8 mpg around town and 23.8
on the freeway at 78 mph in 6th. I shift between 6th
and 5th and have just under 1000 miles. If I slow
down to 72 I can get around 24.8 mpg.

SlingShot 08-28-2010 10:12 PM

For me everyday driving around town I'm getting 14.5, on the interstate the best I've gotten with cruise set at 69 was 26.7

Big Brunsy 08-28-2010 10:17 PM

I just got back from a 450 mile trip which I reset my avg fuel econ. before I left. I got 24.6 mpg avg on the whole trip, which included a half hour sitting on the shoulder at idle.....stupid tint laws
