NEW type of Camaro SS Caliper Brake Noise Dampener "Weights" implemented

2 Attachment(s)
As reported on Homepage Blog.

We just received our first Camaro 2SS with what appears to be a better solution than the adhesive weights on the caliper. Here is a shot from my phone, sorry about the quality.

This has probably already been posted but just in case...

That looks like a roller skate attached to the brake...hmmmm.

Speedfreak 12-30-2009 05:26 PM

that is just as stupid.....why the hell can't the get it right.........

firestone_ss 12-30-2009 05:28 PM

WTF?:confused0068:

Ranger 75 12-30-2009 05:32 PM

This is wrong!

Iwantone2 12-30-2009 05:37 PM

I hope this helps the issue....thanks for the info!

Captain Awesome 12-30-2009 07:23 PM

Let be be the first to say that's WORSE than the stick-on weights.

slick rick 12-30-2009 07:24 PM

What's the VIN?

+1 I totally agree

csjcsj 12-30-2009 07:31 PM

Why in the helllllll is this happening???????? Mine dont have them. But seen others with the flat weights...................... Whats the purpose??????????????????

PAS MSCL 12-30-2009 07:35 PM

I must be missing something here, but why are there weights on the Caliper? The Rotor turns with the wheel , not the Caliper. Please explain, Thanks:popcorn:

Camaro21 12-30-2009 07:36 PM

I noticed these to at the local Cars & Coffee meet last weekend. They look Fugly

ever heard of harmonics?

So, they aren't weights they are Harmonic Dampeners. That could make sense do to the fixed differential. Thanks:chevy:

They were never "weights", but only called that because they resembled wheel balancing weights. They have always been there to provide harmonic dampening.

That sounds like something Mr. Spock would say. :D

PAS MSCL 12-30-2009 07:46 PM

Thanks Tran, this is why I like Camaro5 so well, you learn something new every day.

herkman 12-30-2009 07:49 PM

Yea.......... I think I'll keep my stick ons!

Tran 12-30-2009 07:52 PM

FYI, for those who are newer to the community, here was GM's explanation for the original brake weights:

Some early Camaro customers noticed that there are weights on the Camaro SS calipers. With high-performance vehicles like the Camaro SS, minor brake noise is not uncommon. The weights act as a damper to reduce noise in certain driving conditions. This was done after careful evaluation and validation by our engineering team. These weights will only be added to early builds of the Camaro SS.

PAS MSCL 12-30-2009 08:06 PM

Looks as though GM has expanded there "Evaluation and Validation" and redesigned the newer parts. It would seem to me to be a good idea and would diminish the oscillations up and down each axle half. Might lesson the wear on the CV's as well. I want some!

Nxtr 12-30-2009 08:10 PM

So for those of us with the hodge podge stick on (Harmonic balancers) are we getting retrofitted, or just ride with what we have?

They may look fugly to some, to me its a whole lot better than the large chunk of black painted lead that look like wheel weights.

V/R,
Nick

Breaking down the 2010 Camaro is going to take at least thirds. The 2010 1/3 Camaro features brake weights. The 2010 Camaro 3/3 features roller skates. We've had a very interesting model year in braking.

ibznu2010 12-30-2009 08:23 PM

brakes

should be a recall. my brakes squel from the beginning and now at 8800 miles. vin 12550. WTF Have had 6 camaros in the past and none like this performance & style but come on GM lets get some results here on noisey brakes. My old camaros did not have this problem.

Go see your dealer. This is why we have warranties.

jacques 12-30-2009 08:30 PM

Does anyone know how far above the caliper these weights extend?

khislop007 12-30-2009 08:39 PM

WTF. Those are hideous! I guess people with those won't be able to run 19" or 18" wheels.

Aren't the stock wheels 19 inches?

GNVenom 12-30-2009 09:35 PM

Those dampeners cause a problem with aftermarket - less than 20 in. - wheels (winter wheels). I bought a set of wheels/tires for winter from Tire Rack, and they fit fine. Other people are having problems with the same size BECAUSE of the revised pads with the dampener weights.

So, if you have those, don't plan on putting 18 in. winter tires on your car. They'll never fit.

A stock SS has 20" wheels with the Brembo Brakes.

djsnoflake 12-30-2009 10:12 PM

Yeah I smell fitment issues for an 18 inch winter rim

Bell040 12-30-2009 10:16 PM

those are much worse than the wheel weights... gees

I would rather hear mine squeal

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/attach...1&d=1262224192

this is a joke right?

I think we should coin the term "Training Wheels" for these horrid things.

TaylorRyanSS 12-30-2009 10:31 PM

Hopefully when I get mine in June there won't be anything on the brakes!

2L8IWON 12-31-2009 12:23 AM

Yeah, I have number fifty five thousand and something and my brakes squeal at times to make me want to sink low in my seat and hide my face. I keep telling my wife it's part of the retro thing going on. I keep thinking about replacing the pads with some high end ceramics, but I'm not so sure that's going to fix the problem. I would think my SS would already have high end ceramics on it, but the crazy amount of brake dust that I have shouldn't be there with good ceramics. Nothing like pulling up to stops next to people in this bad boy just squealing like a bucket. Always something to deal with!

JICPerformance 12-31-2009 12:28 AM

squealing pads?

remove pads, apply synthetic brake grease, reinsert pads, done

I do see that these are part of the new pad assemblies from the factory, so changing to any other available pad will likely NOT have these added weights.

LikaRokBowTie 12-31-2009 12:29 AM

What I don't get is that there are other high performance cars with Brembo
brakes and they don't have anything like this added so what is the real truth
is what I'm thinking:iono:

The real truth is that it is a plot by a secret organization to listen to your wheels to find new members for its diabolical plot. There—are you happy?
