trouble shoot this
 

1987 z28. bought this car a few months ago. cheap so it was a gamble. It didnt run. It turned on and you could drive about 30 feet till it died. Fuel lines and gas tank have been worked on by someone who owned it before me. The guys at napa helped me out by installing a new fuel line assembly, fuelpump, and the motor that runs it.

The gas tank has some type of bondo or clay putty. looks like a second rate fix. the tube conecting to the tank has the clay as a weld holding it together.

I felt I had to list that stuff inorder to understand the issue.

here is the problems.

The fuel pump is very loud. seems like it cant maintain pressure on a consistant basis. sometimes I will drive on the freeway and wont hear it for a while. Once I get to a point where im not pressing down on the gas as much it gets quite.

I can start and drive the camaro. while im driving the car (any gear any speed) it can cut the flow of fuel as I press on the gas past a point. If I let off the gas it will go back to normal.

I think its sucking air. does this sound right?

Is your car TPI, TBI or carb? Is the fuel pump in the tank or on the engine? Mine is TPI so its in the tank. This only applies to fuel injected cars. I am not even sure if the carb cars have the old style mechanical pumps or not. :iono: Maybe they all have electric pumps in the tank.

I had to replace the fuel tank and sending unit on my 89. It too had "puddy" from a shoddy fix in the tank and was leaking. I would guess that as you give it more gas (with your foot) it is getting the fuel pump to pump more fuel but it must be sucking some air through this "clay" on the sending unit. I guess thats what you mean by "tube connectiong to the tank" The sending unit holds the pump into the tank and has a few fuel lines coming out of it. The thing circled is the sending unit. If these lines are sucking air, you will have a problem. Remove the tank and replace the unit, while the tank is out, replace it too. Make sure you get new tank straps.

If you say the guy at NAPA installed a new pump and other stuff... did he remove the tank to do so? You either have to remove the tank or cut a hole in the trunk. First I would suggest replacing the tank and sending unit if you already have a new pump. It is a pretty straight forward job. Get a Hayes or Chilton book if your going to keep this car. They can be tempramental but easy to work on.

Other then that I have no idea. As for the noise, my pump is pretty loud too. I can't hear it when I am driving but when you turn the key on but don't start the car you can hear it buzzing and it buzzes for a sec when you turn it off.

Its TPI. Pump is in the tank. the sending was replaced along with the motor and fuel pump. The only thing in that general area that i didnt replace is the tank.

Napa did remove the tank and suggested I replace it as well. I found a tank at a junkyard. out of an 84 trans am.

The noise your here from the pump is the same as mine but mine doesnt stop.

I think its the tank. thanks for you insight. your car is nice. I want my car that clean.
