"How much horsepower?"

Hi all. First post here. I've been lurking for a while though. I picked up my ZL1 a couple months ago and since then I've been approached a couple times and people ask "How much horsepower?" What is your response? Mine is still stock and all the marketing says 580. We all know that's at the crank and there is less than that at the wheels, but that's really what counts. Especially for you folks who are modified... do you quote the marketing numbers or try to explain the difference in crank vs rwhp? Just curious how everyone answers this question.

I tell them it's stock, and tell them 580 at the crank. Most people that have asked me that aren't car people, and usually follow up with "What type gas mileage do you get?!?" or "Where can you us that kind of power around here?!?!"

Anybody that is a car fan will more than likely already know about the ZL1 and what the specifications are. At least that's my experience.

Cars are marketed at their crank horsepower. Most people don't understand the difference so I just say 580hp. If they ask "at the wheels or at the crank?", I will answer them. Otherwise it makes no sense to short change the ZL1. You have to compare apples with apples.

Welcome.

Just tell them the gross numbers. Unless they are a gearhead they're not going to understand the explanation anyway.

The average rwhp for a stock M6 is ~495. A6 is ~465.

I just tell'm 580 stock HP......

I tell them "not enough".

If you really want to get in some technical hp numbers, rule of thumb, manual loses 15% to driveline & auto 20%

so 580hp @ crank to wheels = 492 rwhp

580hp @ crank to wheels = 464 rwhp

again just a rule of thumb  & my input

When asked I reply that it is stock and is rated at 580 brake horse power.

I usually say 835 and counting. Then I have to explain I have about 6 dyno sheets that get higher everytime I change something on the car. My favorite is when I run a 10 second drag pass and then pull into the pit area to give it some cooldown time and someone comes up and asks if it is stock.

I just switched to AMSOIL and now I'm running 10's!

Usually I say around 600. I've only installed a CAI but if a guy with a Mustang or Challenger asks I say just under a 1,000 and watch their mouths drop open. Hahahahahaha!
