1 Attachment(s)
Mickey Thompson has just released a 28X6.00R17LT RADIAL skinny!!! Finally!!! A perfect match for those running 17" Drag Radials in the rear!!!
We all heard the rumors these were "in the works", and now it's on their website. Haven't done a price search yet....but hopefully they're affordable. http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/s...em=SportsmanSR |
Like street friendly? Nice!
|

What would the upside be with these compared to he M&H?
|
Very cool! Jason Moulton from M/T had posted on the YB that they were going to release something in the near future.
Yeah Tim, they will in all likelihood be heavier. I've run 15" skinnies both bias ply and radials, and the latter drive much better on the street. I had Moroso DS2's that were super light but were super smooth. |
Maybe I'll sell my Nurburgring set next year and get me a 17" track pack.
|
Good to know, I'm running hoosiers 26" street skinny lol 28"s would look better !
|
And this makes me want to buy big-n-little Welds for the ZL1.
|
Maybe I'll start commuting on skinnies again. :)
This car lived on skinnies, and I even drove it to Bristol TN on skinnies in 2000: http://www.fquick.com/images/vehicle.../695298903.jpg |

According to a response back from Shaun (Tech Rep at Mickey Thompson), these new skinnies are load rated at 1,025 lbs. per tire. Don't you think our cars would exceed that? Just asking!!!
Anyway, he said they "ARE AVAILABLE", but I would have to go through Jegs or Summit to get pricing information. Working on that now. Edit: Got the "run-around" from Jegs. They claim they aren't going to be available until "Early 2014 Sometime", while Shaun (from M/T) insists they are "in-stock" ready to go!!! And Jeg's says they don't have pricing established either yet!!! Still waiting to hear back from Summit....probably tomorrow. Also, according to M/T, max PSI is 50. He said if you are close to the max load capacity, then use 50, but adjust accordingly! |
Well here's some interesting info I was able to dig up while researching this new tire.
Mickey Thompson 28x6.00R17LT Sportsman S/R: Weight: Approx. 22 lbs. Load Rating: 1025 lbs. at 50 psi M&H 4.5/28-17 Bias-Ply Front Runner: Weight: Approx. 17 lbs. Load Rating: 1325 lbs. at 35 psi So the M&H Bias-Ply has a higher load rating than the radial M/T????....I certainly did not expect that!!! And I suppose 5 lbs. of added weight per tire is about right. Hmmm, what to do....what to do? |
One of our distributors has the part number in the system.By looking at the price, should be about the same as the M&H

I want drag radials on the back but may need to stick with the bias up front. |

Why would they engineer a 28"skinny rated to 130 knowing that some may reach speeds of 150 plus?:noidea:
...I am still excited ,we have options now! |

Well, if anyone is interested, Summit Racing sent me a e-mail this morning and said they can get them, but it would have to be a "Special Order" (have to call them to order). Pricing is $253.99 each. And according to M/T, they are in-stock ready to go.
Personally, I think I'll probably just stick with the M&H bias-ply. Higher load rating and cheaper! |
They aren't in stock, regardless of who told you that. You won't see them til early next year, per the product development manager.

Now that I have seen the price and the weight I think I will go with a TSW Nurburgrig 18" set up. A 18 x 8 TSW wheel with a 225/60R18 GY Eagle sport all season is 44lbs together and cost about $380 together. It would also have a higher load rating and be good to 149mph.(I have to drive an hour to the track so this is good for me) The MT radial tire on a Weld Wheel would weigh about 38lbs and cost about $680 together. Start multiplying that by 2 and adding in what the rear wheels and tires cost and WOW!
|
its a start anyway. but im sure they will be ok for 90% of us. rated for 130 so that means 150 lol
|
I've bought their 26X7.5-15 MICKEY THOMPSON SPORTSMAN FRONT TIRE 8 PLY MT in the past, and they were $145 or so. I see even their 28x7.5x15's are $157 on evilbay. Either way I see myself getting a set in 2014.
|
Heck I have been using the 245 BFG front tires off the LS that only have a 7" contact patch and weigh 30lbs. Ea....Need a real track pack I digress.
|
Just FYI..........
Jim's Racing Tires quoted me $219 ea. (plus shipping) for these new M/T Skinnies. Still considering whether I should run these or the M&H Bias-Ply with my new Welds?!?!?!? |
198 my cost from jegs. Won't be avail til jan.

McCormack just gave me what I thought was a pretty good deal on these $219 ea. (shipped), so I made the commitment!!! Guess I'm going to try these things out!!! |
