CAI: difference in 1/4
 

Once again the search button fails me with irrelevant information

I was wondering who has only a CAI and been on the 1/4 and if you have stock drag times and drag times with the CAI. Is there even a difference?

What is your coolant temperature reading on your DIC? I am getting about 200 degrees at idle. Is this normal?

Check my Build Journal. I did mine with a tranny tune at the same time and gained a 0.296 ET and 1.25 MPH in the 1/4.

200* is not terrible. I normally race at 180* because I have an electric water pump. But in the 190*'s is about normal for a stock car. If it's 210*+, sit and let it cool.

Back at the First Camaro Fest We were installing CAI kits at the Track and guys were testing them before and after and the results on 4 cars were consistant across the board, 2-3 Tenths and 1-2 MPH.

CAI will help bring cooler air into your engine (making more HP and usually
.2 tenth or so improvement in the 1/4 mile).

But that doesn't mean your engine can't run hot if your driving aggressively or in stop and go traffic, especially in warmer weather. A CAI really isn't designed to keep your engine cool. Its just bringing cooler air into the engines intake producing more HP. Your engine can still run hot or over heat if its not running properly or driven very aggressively (hot lapping it at the track for example).

Some guys have their engine fan set to come on at a lower temp and that can help cool the engine. Also make sure you have proper coolant levels.

I dont know about LS3's but Ls1's and both being aluminum like 190-205 degrees water temp for best power on N/A cars.Over that no good and under same thing. They like a bit of heat. now colder air is a different thing, colder the better but not the same as colder engine so dont confuse the two.

You need a 160 degree thermostat. Most noobs think this means your car will run at 160 degrees, which is obviously too cold, but it only means that the thermostat begins to open at 160 degrees. My car runs at 180 degrees (plus or minus 2 degrees) at all times and that is GREAT for making the most power!

Engine Temp needs to be above 185 degrees for Clearances to be correct and for Oil Additives to be active.

Hence the 186 degree Thermostat.

Thermostats set the lowest temp the engine can run and fans and radiator set the upper limits of Temp.

With your tune what if any adjustments are made to the fans?

I make the fans more aggressive for cooling to keep temps at 90C
