V6 Auto Trans Only Rated for 315HP?
I posted this in the transmission section a couple of months ago, but got no replies so I'm reposting it here.
So I was looking at the GM Powertrain web site, and looked at the A6 used in the V6 Camaro (select "transmissions," then select the 6-speed auto with code "MYB"), and under the listed specs, it says, "Maximum engine power: 315 bhp (235 kw)." How can that be, when the '12 and up models make 323 hp? Is anyone beefing up their tranny when molding for increased HP, since apparently the stock LFX output already exceeds the tranny rating? Just adding bolt ons is going to bump it even further over the top, and then there's the FI guys. Can this be right? |
The automatic transmission is very stout. Been on this site since the beginning. Have watched every V6 build thread, and have gotten to know tons of V6 owners with mods, and I have never heard of the automatic transmission failing.
Even supercharged V6 autos are having no problems so far. You have nothing to worry about unless your wanting to do some crazy expensive high horsepower build. |
Also keep in mind, I believe those power numbers are also paired with the maximum gross vehicle weight, which if you look at that page, is MUCH higher than the weight of our cars.

KM is correct. We have around 40 plus of these either our super charger or single/twin turbo's and they are all holding up great. We are in the middle of adapting a 6L80E to a build that will be more HP than we have done to date also.
The torque converters are weak, but customer usually go with our purpose built stall units that are tuff as heck. |
Usually when talking about the transmission itself, you focus on intended max weight of the vehicle and the maximum torque. HP really doesn't matter because it is a function of torque and rotation speed. The 6L50 is rated for a 5000 lb. vehicle and around 400 ft lbs of torque if I remember right. I've been running way beyond 400 TQ on mine for a long time (lots of trips down the 1/4 strip) and not one problem, yet (cross fingers). I wouldn't worry about the tranny, the torque converter and differential will go out way before it unless you got a dud.

Ok, that's good to know guys.
I'm still confused as to why they publish that HP rating, if it's not meaningful and implies that the LFX exceeds it. The specs on the that site state it's rated for a 6613 lb (3000 kg) GVWR, has a max engine torque rating of 332 lb-ft, and a max "gearbox torque" rating (whatever that is) of 480 lb-ft, which sounds pretty substantial. I appreciate you 3 especially piping up to clarify this for me and help me learn. |
If Gretchen hasn't broken his, then no one will.

I think its a warranty thing between the manufacturer and Chevy. How have manuals held up on power mods, anyone know?

Why doesnt the automatic have a limited slip differential on the v6

Thanks just wondering if it had to do with torque limit of the trans

I'm guessing price. The Eaton G80 LOCKER (not limited slip) has been around a while and is not cheap. I have one in my Trailblazer 4wd, in my 2003 Duramax 4wd, and now a third in my M6 Camaro.
Its available in the 1LT and above, I'm guessing as an order option unless some dealers order theirs that way. Here is an old school type video: once one wheel achieves about 100 rpm faster than another a flyweight mechanism engages and locks both sides together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbMZ9vcYVSg |
I have never heard of a locking diff being available on V6 auto Camaros. So yours is an auto and it came with that G80 when you bought it?
Everything I've read has said the V6 autos were just SOL regarding their factory diffs. |
