Engine swap is under way

The engine swap is under way. Pulled the 402 Out of the Camaro and am in the process of installing it into the 72 K5 Blazer. Soon the Camaro is going to have a 500 horse 427 resting under the hood.

Don't know why I can't see the pix again...

AFSNightrod 06-05-2007 01:17 AM

I can't either, but I just figure it's because I'm on a DoD computer. They won't let me look at hardly anything.

KILLER74Z28 06-06-2007 12:23 PM

BTTT

Can you all see the pictures now? :iono:

Trying to fix my mess-up...

Bingo! All pix are good now. Can't wait to see and hear of the progress on the Camaro. She's going to be a monster w/ that 427 under the hood! And...wasn't that 427 originally yours?

Mr. Wyndham 06-06-2007 08:28 PM

I'm curious having never done an engine swap myself...i'm sure I could do it, if I could figure out how to get the engine out of the freaking car! What is the most common way people do that?

Guy withda bowtie 06-06-2007 08:46 PM

Ya that is guna be a fast camaro man. but i have a 97 base model camaro thats gettin kinda old. it still looks real clean but the engine and tranny are goin. So i was wonderin what would be a good engine to drop in it. i was thinkin an ls1 but i dont think i can find them new anymore

stevenm357 06-06-2007 09:15 PM

Can't wait to see the 427 installed! nice sign too!

AFSNightrod 06-07-2007 04:25 AM

Engine swaps are tough if you haven't done it before. My brother is somewhat mechanically inclined and pulled the engine out of his Toyota all by himself (WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL) with the help of a book. He broke it down and took the damaged parts to a shop where they were rebuilt. You can do it. It just takes time and determination...

Sorry. Not trying to highjack the thread.

Here you go: http://www.crateenginedepot.com/stor...7-P855C53.aspx

Scroll down and get the LS6 for the same money.

No, i know that...I'm "mechanically inclined", too. But, physically, how do you get the damn engine out of the car!?! Not with your bare hands I'd expect...

JWz28 06-07-2007 02:33 PM

Engine Hoist. You can rent them at some local Auto Parts stores. Pull the motor and tranny in one piece. Take 'em a part, lift the motor up to an engine stand bolt 'er up and start disassembly.

Gotcha...And instead of taking them apart, some people - the ones who are actually swapping the engines, just put a new one in? That clears things up - thanks!

TAG UR IT 06-08-2007 01:25 AM

Yeah...but in most cases, it's a lot more than just a swap. Tranny usually has to be changed, larger radiator, and a whole mess of other beefier parts. When putting twice the power (or in some cases more) to the ground, you need to start thinking about all the suspension parts and rear end as well. But, for just swapping the engine and going larger, there will usually be a lot more than just the engine that needs changing.

AFSNightrod 06-08-2007 09:20 AM

Yeah you have to do all the supporting mods if you want your setup to last.

Mr. Wyndham 06-08-2007 10:37 AM

Damn...

AFSNightrod 06-08-2007 10:43 AM

It isn't too bad. You just have to make smart investments and really research the parts you need so you don't need to do multiple installs of the same part. It will save you money in the long run.

KILLER74Z28 06-08-2007 02:20 PM

Engine swaps are always a hassle unless you are replacing you engine with the exact same engine ie small block to small block, big block to big block. Computer controlled engines are a whole different breed because of the ECM/PCM (Computer) and wiring harnesses. GM is really good about interchangeable parts on the earlier SB and BB. I on the other hand, am running into clearance issues with the Big Block. Come to find out I have more room in my Camaro than I do the Blazer… :iono: Time and patience, that’s all it takes…

When doing an engine swap you want to pull all of the accessories off of the old motor like the all the alternator, water pump, a/c condenser, intake, carb / fuel injection..etc (it's a long list).... and transfer them over to the new motor. What ever will work on the new motor or dosen't require to be upgraded..use it. As they say..if it ain't broke...

to me, changing the engine is changing the soul.

the car is not original anymore. not a true one anymore. I 'm against mods.

am i the only one?

Camaro_Man_101 06-11-2007 11:38 AM

No, me too. I only approve of minor modifications..."performance enhancers" I call them - there's no replacement for displacement. Superchargers, intercoolers, intakes, cyllinder heads - you know the simple stuff.

The only reason I'd approve of a complete engine swap is if the car is so old - milage OR age, whatever, and the car couldn't go on.

I disagree, on the one hand but agree on the other. If you are talking about a very limited production car like a Yenko, a COPO Camaro, a Z-L1 I agree changing out the engine or modding in general is a mistake. Not because it is no longer "true" any more but because of its historical significance and rarity.

On the other hand if you have one of 100,000 who cares. I think it is a personal accomplishment to take something you love and make it better. It's something that you can look at and take pride in knowing that you did it.

Way to go Killer!!! More people should have the courage to do what you are doing.
