My Sig229 in .40 wouldn't lock back either. I first investigated the magazine and it was in perfect working order. I then started looking at the slide lock lever. I realized it was dragging on the frame ever so slightly and the magazine spring wasn't strong enought to overcome the friction. I lubed it up well and it worked perfectly ever since. I guess maybe I shoulda oiled it a bit before shooting it but I was too excited.

I am a retired Sgt. Deputy Sheriff and also retired military. My last two years in the military I was a gun mechanic, mainly guns for chopper gunships, and in the S/O I was certified by Al., F.B. ONE, and NRA firearms instructor. This is leading up to let y'all know that I am gun poor. I enjoy firing them, working on them and talking about them. I guess you could say they are my hobby, or to the Brady bunch, they may call me " one of these gun nuts ".
I try to tell people that firearms are tools, just like hammers, screw drivers etc.. Never lose respect for them, or like most tools, they will bite you. Don't be afraid of them, respect them and they will serve you well.

That's usually the answer for jams and such. Ninty per cent are caused by the mags.

My advice is to shoot them. The one that feels best to you would be the one to get.

ok i have a question for you gun nuts, in the future (maybe 4 years or so) i wanna purchase a fire arm my question is can you LEGALLY purchase M14 or M1A1 Garand Rifle in the USA?:iono:

i know i would have to get a gun license (and other things )

Both are legal to buy. The M14 can be bought with a selector switch( wouldn't advise it, VERY hard to handle) and you would need a fed stamp for it.

You are so right. I worked a few accidental shootings of a child. They stay in your mind forever. Being a country boy, I was raised with firearms and was very well taught about caution. Best advice I can give is, don't hide them and make them a mystery. If your child asks a question, answer as best you can and stress the part that these are not toys and if they find one, find an adult and show it to them. If you don't hide something from a child, they will usually obey your rules, try to hide something can lead to tradegy.

I agree in theory, but in practice, it has it's caveats... and it depends on how ornery the child is.

Long story short, I'm #6 of 8 kids, when I was ~6, I was accused of shooting a dog with a bb gun, (I didn't)... at ~9yrs, I recall an older brother taking dads luger and putting a hole thru a steel lawn chair... ~12 another brother emptied shot shells, and shot the primers with a bb gun. Primer shot out and hit younger brother, broke the skin is all.... I could go on.

Some would say we were unsupervised too much, probably, but think back on your own childhood some of the stuff you did that your parents never knew about.

I'm in my 50's now, shooting is something I do with my kids every chance we get. I was fortunate that my kids didn't have 5 older brothers to teach them 80 different ways to be sneaky.

But yes, kids should be shooting, supervised, at a young age, and taught GOOD habits. I have some bad habits that have followed me for years, I'll let my son teach his son better ways :D

Bottom line, keep that stuff locked up tight till it's time to shoot

AR-15 rocks. Not sure where you're located, but if you're in Ontario I can tell you a spot were you can shoot any weapon you want, and don't have to be a member or hold a PAL / RPAL either.

Here's a couple snapshots of my safe stuffed with ARs, AKs, FNs and Saiga12s

ARs are in 5.56, 6.8SPC, 300blkout, 7.62x51. I think i have about 10 or 11

2xAKs in 7.62x39 and one in 5.45x39(AK-74)

2 FnFALs in 7.62 nato

3xSaiga12s one RandR Targets custom Tactical, one Tromix S-06 custom and one stock saiga that I am going to customize

A bunch of handuns in just about every caliber

Not shown are my SBRs topped with suppressors. Before the Camaro i started to venture into the NFA world and built a couple SBRs with gemtech and AAC suppressors

Guns were my passion/hobby before i bought my 5th gen. I need to get some better photos and take them out and dust them off.

No, nothing to share, just another obsession like the car. Do you need 1000hp....no but it sure is fun. same with guns....why get just one.

I need to take some pics of my ammo supply, i think i am at about 80,000 rounds or so. And none of it is .22LR, all for the rifles and pistols. I shoot a whole lot and compete in USPSA and 3gun. I also reload all my ammo so its pretty cheap.

If the zombie hoards do come to my neighborhood we will be set however:D

Anywho, as a followup on the previous thread...

I picked up a Smith & Wesson M&P 9MM (4.25") on Sunday. It was used in LIKE NEW condition with everything included like factory. Realized when I got home it was made circa Summer 2006 and doesn't have any of the M&P revisions aside from the black magazine followers and maybe the non fubar'd finish. My other handgun is a Springfield Armory EMP 9MM. It is #568 and so its also probably from sometime in '06. I've had it for about a year. My goal is to pick one and sell the other. I don't have a lot of interest in having more than one handgun right now as I prefer shooting rifles for enjoyment.

Note: I had a Smith & Wesson M&P 9MM Pro Series, SS Slide, 5" (bought new) but sold it. I wasn't crazy about the sights and it ended up being a little long for my liking.

I stopped by Precision Firearms in Baton Rouge this evening after work. This wasn't scientific. I'm no Bob Munden or Jerry Miculek. In fact, I probably suck. I use a thumbs forward grip and an 'I dont remember how to stand' stance  I bought one target for each gun. I decided to shoot for bullseye at 15 and head at 30.

Brought all the ammo I had on hand. Each gun ran mags loaded with either Speer Gold Dot +P, Federal HST +P, Remington UMC Target, or Winchester White Box.

This was the Springfield Armory EMP 9MM. I think I shot 5 mags at the head and 5 at the bullseye (8 rounds each).

The EMP of course being smaller is more work to control. The SA trigger makes accurate shots easier but twice I double tapped on accident. It's a comfortable gun but as my relatively short range session wore on it slowly became uncomfortable to shoot because of its smaller size (I have average hands, I'm 5'9"). It's really has some pop with +P (which actually it's not rated for I don't think). I had two malfunctions. Once the slide locked back with rounds left in the mag so I had to release the slide and keep going. The 2nd time I didn't seat the mag all the way and it dropped down far enough to not feed after the first shot. Typically the slide will lock back on a loaded back about once per outing. It fed the hollow point rounds fine. I did note that if I want to release the slide with the slide stop/release I can't reach it with my thumb very well. I have to hit it with my left hand.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...IMAG0079-1.jpg

This was the Smith & Wesson M&P 9MM. If I recall it was 4-6 mags at the head and 6 at the bullseye (17 rounds each).

The M&P being larger was more comfortable and was a pleasure to shoot through the entirety of my visit. The trigger is vastly different from my EMP of course and took some adjusting. It had no malfunctions of any sort with any ammo. I can reach the slide stop/release with ease using my shooting hand as well. I noticed however that I'm shoot consistently low and to the left. I'm pretty sure I did that with my last M&P as well. Perhaps a serious adjustment is needed on my part. My best friend shot my M&P as accurate as his Glock where I shot it low/low left so I'm confident it's my lackluster handgun skills.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r...IMAG0078-1.jpg

In summary, I love my EMP's handsome looks/classic styling. I also enjoy the SA trigger. However I kind of feel like I am hurting myself by staying with the baby 1911. I think whether or not one may be more accurate than the other doesn't matter at this point. The M&P I feel is going to be accurate enough to make me happy, reliable enough to depend on, but more importantly the simpler manual of arms and 'service' size of it will be preferable while I pursue some more training and learn the fundamentals of handguns. I have had handguns for two and a half years now. A revolver, a fullsize 1911, the baby 1911, a sub compact XD, and a 5" polymer gun. It seems now I should settle on a service sized weapon, a tool, that I can learn with. All other things aside.

That was a long read!

Left handed?

Get it. As far as I know they aren't making any more. My dealer told me the one I got was made only because they had some parts left over from the limited run last year to make a handful more.

metthem 08-30-2012 06:39 AM

This has probably been asked over and over in here but this thread is like 80 pages long, so I ma going to ask.... I went to the gun range and shot for the first time, they gave me a Ruger 9mm, and the 'instructor' let me shoot his 45 revolver. Ok, for a first time shooter, that 9mm had a lot going on; slide flying back, recoil, shells flying out, I was a nervous as heck. Then I shot the 45 and it kicked so hard it about flew out of my hand. I had a blast shooting them and I know with practice you get used to the recoil and noise and shell casings busting out. I WANT A GUN now, of course the question of the day is what kind should I buy. I would want one that I wouldn't have to uprgrade in three months that would be good for home protection, and possibly to carry with a ccw, and that the wife could shoot in case of emergency. What brand, what size, and pistol or revolver.
I am thinking a revolver would be easier to maintain and maybe more reliable, what are your thoughts?
Also, where is a good place to buy a gun? I seen some places online, but it seems you have to have it sent to a local gun store and pick it up..... does this piss the local gun store owner off or is this just business as usual? Seems kinda strange to me.
Thanks in advance,
Gary

I'm sure it isn't the answer you're looking for, but this is the right answer:

You aren't ready to buy a gun. You need to keep going to the range, and renting guns to shoot for the day. Continue to work with your instructor, or any of the staff at the range and make sure they know you are new and you are interested in trying various guns out for size to determine which one you feel the most comfortable with.

When you are ready to buy a gun, not only will you not ask others what you should be buying, but when the time comes no one would be able to talk you out of the one you have chosen to buy for yourself.

Also, when the time comes, your question won't be formed as "which should I buy", but instead formed like, "I am thinking about buying the Springfield XDM 40 because I like the reliability and how it felt in my grip, but I am wondering if there is an equivalent in 45 cal?". See what I mean?

Here's a pic of the front. I cant get the tip of a butter knife in the gaps. the tolerances are very very tight. Its built in the USA 100% and is a family run company. I opted for the 5 gauge steel all around and the 5/16" door with an extra 3/16 plate welded to it on the inside. This is my 4th and final layer of security. If they get this far....i must be dead!!!!!:D
