Northern Tier Camaro Meet - June 5th?

Hello all,

With all the excitement of the Camaro5 Fest (C5F) going on down in Georgia (and me not able to attend), I got a little jealous and thought it would be nice to try to coordinate some type of "Northern Tier Camaro Meet" for this coming Spring. This would of course be an open invitation to ANYONE who wants to attend. So, I'd like to try to gauge your interest in something like this and solicit your ideas for suggestions. So far we have a couple good locations that need a vote, or you can tell us your own ideas. Here's what we have so far:

(1) Interstate Dragways, just South of Moorhead, MN, is having a Car Show and "Fun Run" on June 5th, 2010. I went to the same kind of event out there last Summer and it was pretty nice.....small event, but nice. The Car Show runs from 9am - 1pm, and the 1/4 mile unlimited "Fun Run" is from 1pm - 5pm. The cost is $20 to participate in just the Car Show, and an additional $30 if you wish to race on the track. Not sure what it would cost just to come out as a spectator, I'll check on that. Here's a link to the their website with lots of good pictures and links: http://www.interstatedragways.net/

(2) The second choice (so far) is on that same weekend. Devils Lake, ND is hosting their annual "Devils Run" Car Show. I've never been to one of these, but it appears to be a 3-day (June 4, 5, 6) event with lots of daily activities going on, including a "Camaro Rally" and SCCA Autocross Run. From reading about last years, I guess it's a pretty big event, that even had coverage on the TV show "My Classic Car". Looks like if we do a group purchase on the pre-registration, the cost would be $30 per car. Check out the link below to see the schedule of events with plenty of pictures and links:

Obviously, there are pros and cons to each location, which is why I want to put it to a vote before we try to make any official announcements. The drag strip has the huge bonus of a 1/4 drag strip to run on, and I think it would be much easier to get us all together on one day, at one place, at one time, rather than at a 3-day event that basically encompasses the whole city (from the sounds of it). However, the Devil's Run event is a pretty big event with lots of activities to participate in, and attracts car enthusiasts from across the country. Both places seem to be pretty good options, so it's a very tough decision, which is why I'd appreciate your opinion on this. So please place a vote, or let us know your other suggestions. Thanks.

So no one is really interested in either of these options, huh?!??!? 85 people have looked at this, and only 5 have responded. I guess maybe it's just too early to try to plan something like this. Maybe we'll wait a month or two and bring the subject up again. Any one have any better ideas out there???

So I just skimmed thru that long schedule for the Devil's Lake deal. I saw alot about rummage sales and swap meets but nothing about racing?? is it just a big car show deal er what? it's all too far north for me, but just wondering

I think at the Devil's Lake event, the only "racing" event is the SCCA Autocross Run. I'm not really sure what all that entails, or even what kind of racing that really is. Other than that, it's a whole big mess of other car show type events. I hear it's a pretty cool weekend (if you have an entire weekend to blow), but I really would like to see some drag racing too. That's why I'm leaning towards going to the Moorhead car show instead.

What about the Moorhead Car Show, is that one too far away for you too??? Oh come on, it's just a hop, skip, and a jump up I-29 a bit!!!! Well, I'm just trying to stir up some interest, hope to see ya there...

Well, I've got bad news....
I just got word that Interstate Dragways is closed until further notice!!!! Something about a conflict between the management and the land owners. That doesn't mean that someone else won't step in and take-over and fill the same shoes, but at this point, it is an unknown situation. I'll let ya'll know if I hear of any new management changes or schedules at the drag strip, but for now, it looks like I'll be going to Devil's Lake on June 5th. Sorry to be a downer....

Sorry to hear about MN, but I have another idea for a meet. I was watching the show Bullrun on the Speed Channel and there is a team from Bismarck/Mandan (Team NSX). They have a website called cincitydesigns.com, I was looking on there website and found a link to nd500.com. They are having a Road Rally Race starting in Bismarck and ending in Yellowstone National Park. The dates are July 28th-August 1st. They are having a car show and meet and greet the day before the race. This may be a good option to get together. Check out nd500.com for details on the rally.

I would be in favor of Devils Run. Sprit Lake casino has a muscle car show/contest that runs that friday afternoon and typically has a free steak lunch for participants.

Another option is to schedule a weekday at BIR in Brainered, or have a event tied in with their driving school which is scheduled for a couple of mondays each month starting May 3 and runs through October

Hey, I like the new ideas above, keep 'em coming and we'll formulate a plan for something soon!!! I'm dying to get my car out of storage already!!! Anyway, I did find out that there IS new management at the Interstate Dragways, and they are planning out their new schedule. I talked to the new manager, and told him we'd like to come out for a car show and fun run. He said he would let us know the best date for that, so more to come on that soon. But that doesn't mean we can't do other things too!!! I told the manager at the track that maybe they should schedule "around" the Devil's Run event, so interested folks can go to that too!!! We'll see what happens....

I have consulted with my dad and we are in for the drag racing in Moorehead. (mostly because we haven't had this bad boy down the track yet) But we where also wondering how many passes we would get....

Thanks,

Cole

Hey Cole,
I am still waiting to hear back from the new track management about their new schedule for the year. I'm pretty sure the proposed car show and fun run will be rescheduled for another day to allow for the Devil's Run event. We'll see what transpires...
I will definitely attend the local car shows around here this summer, but as much as I would like to, I won't be going on any tracks. From what I've been told, if you (or your Dad) was to wreck his car, or blow the engine, or whatever else, your insurance and factory warranty will not cover anything that occurs while on a Drag Strip or Race Track!!! I can't say with 100% certainty if this is true, and I'm sure it probably depends alot on your own particular insurance company. But I'm not taking any chances!!!! Make sure your Dad is aware of this, and maybe have him check with his insurance company before you guys make any plans to race on the track.
As far as how many times you can race during the day.... It's unlimited, as many times as you want to get in the staging lanes, you can race. With the other cars there too, I would guess you could get on the track 8-10 times during the afternoon.

Thanks Blazzin...We have already checked with our insurance people and they cover it. We also planned on racing it at Minot's dragstrip this summer. My Dad is a GM Mechanic at Hazen Motors so anything we break we can fix. haha. Just keep us informed of when we could possibly get together and show off our sweet rides.

This is basically a Bump to get people to read it. My dad and I are insanely pumped to go if we get enough camaro owners interested! And it is getting close to June!
