Already posted. :) http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...35#post6099835

That is pretty crazy though! Hopefully it comes up without any missing parts (cough rims!)

I said the same thing! But someone posted that onstar would have had to been activated first.

That's just one more reason why Onstar is worthless if indeed it is on the car and they still cannot locate it. They hype that service up like you're in good hands if your vehicle is stolen and there's a tiny side of you that wants the car to be stolen just to see if it really works for all the money they charge. Lojack will be going on mine for sure after reading this.

I believe Onstar is always active. All you have to do is call them and they will turn it on. It is always sitting by idle until you press the button and ask for services and for a fee they will provide them. As a matter of fact, Cadillac used to and may still use Onstar to repossess vehicles when payment is past due.

Thats what I thought. Well then, they should be able to track down that vehicle. We should hear something soon, about what happened I'm sure.

Is OnStar active straight from the factory, or does it only get activated when the car is sold?

snackbar64 01-30-2013 02:14 PM

The system is completely passive, but always active. The services may not be available to you until you pay if that makes sense. If your car was stolen the police can use Onstar to locate your car whether you paid for the service or not. Onstar can tell you where you are whether you pay for the service or not. Their tracking of the vehicle remains passively active it's just a matter of if you are paying for it or not.

Not on a new car as everything is setup on that first call.
until then its a blank slate.

the dealer would not have those accounts active until the car is sold.

snackbar64 01-30-2013 02:32 PM

At the push of that Onstar button you will get a live rep regardless of whether the dealer activates it or not. Next time you are in a showroom with the key turned on try it out. Now they may not do anything until you give out that credit card number but the system works right out of the factory.

HDRDTD 01-30-2013 02:49 PM

My question was more along the lines of, Is would the Onstar tracking feature be enabled/active while the car is still in the showroom before it actually got sold, or would the tracking service only work to track the vehicle AFTER the car is sold and the customer/dealer activates the account?

In otherwords, since the car was stolen right out of the showroom before it was sold, would they still be able to use Onstar to track it?
