New Car for kid

You know him better than we do. Is he responsible enough to handle 400+ hp in his first car? If yes, SS. 300+ hp? If yes, 2LT. Else Chevy Cruze is a really nice car.

If it were my kid....the 2lt would be the choice. Less power, better mpg, lower Insurance. Although for my kid, i'd buy a cheap, used "beater" for him first till he learns how to drive. I think new drivers should earn a nice car, learn to respect the responsibility first before they get dropped in a new muscle car. Just my .02, it's your son.

I would opt for the 2LT, when i was 16 I bought a 97 WS6 with 305hp, while i never got my self hurt in it, i did however get plenty of tickets. My father split the cost with me after a lifetime of saving on my part.

Only you know your son, 426 hp is a lot for a kid that age, but I cant judge that for you.

PS: not sure were rochester is but i grew up in West Lafayette, and the police there knew me by name lol.

Hello and thanks for all the responds. He has been driving since his arms could reach the steering wheel and we actually owned a 700hp 70's Camaro at one time and he handled it well but off course that was with me watching. If I got it the camaro would be automatic so 400 horsepower for the ss. I'm not worried about the price. My agency figured only 192$ a month for insurance and 197 for the zl1. Was actually shocked and did some figuring that gas would be about 2,000 dollars a year so cost to own is not much. I just hope he will be happy with it cause once you get it you keep it.

Honestly if you are sure your kid will be responsible enough to understand what these cars are capable of and how they can get away from you if you really push it and are not careful then definitely go with the SS.

I had an 83 camaro v6 in high school as my 1st car @16. Didnt have enough power to get out of its own way. Still had enough to get me in trouble though... and i had been driving farm trucks for 3 years. I paid 1/2 for it, was only 3400 used in 1989. Still made sooo many other kids jealous

He is going t want to upgrade to a v8 sooner or later, I beleive its always a v8 unless its a daily driver and since he is going to be using it for a daily driver go for the 2lt.

as others have said, only you know your son. the only thing I can add is that in a month the last of my three kids will grudate high school. in the 8 yr or so that I had one attending high school every year there were about 3-6 kids killed in car accidents that were primarily caused by mom and dad getting them that mustang or BMW that they just couldn't handle. IMO, no 16 yr old has the maturity, experience, nor skill to safely operate a high performance vehicle on a daily basis. inevitably, they get comfortable in it and begin to get careless. what they think they can do begins to exceed what they can do.

again, just my opinion, and only you know your son. but personally, I wouldn't put mine in one.

i have made my kids buy their own cars, that is what I had to do. most kids have an accident in the first year or 2 of driving. i drove a pos mustang i bought for 300, when i graduated college, civil engineer, i bought a 77 transam, got 3 tickets in 2 months, good thing i did not have it in highschool, my pos mustang had a sixer

jmo kids should drive junk they buy. it helps them appreciate things more

I really cant see buying a 16 year old the SS.

I will add to what jd10013 wrote. You son might driving but how would handle his friends. His friends might get on about speeding or street racing and so on. My advice get the lt.
