2SS exhaust Vs Mustang GT sound...
OK- sorry if this question sounds rediculous... and even more sorry I'm actually trying to emulate Ford... but, hey- they've been doing this one detail right for years!
I'm looking for an exhaust to best replicate that deep, compressed bass sound that Ford Mustang GT's are famous for. Everyone who has any interest in muscle cars can pick out a GT exhaust from miles away, it just has that bad a$$ sound... That said, my 2SS LS3 is being built next week, I've listened to all the sound clips on C5, you tube, etc... but an amateur video clip broadcast through computer speakers doesn't quite represent the real-life sound, so I'm looking for someone who's personally heard the different exhausts and can best guide my purchase. So far, from what I've heard, I'm leaning heavily toward the Flowmaster American Thunder... I'm about to purchase, but I wanted one last shot at input. Thanks in advance! |
I personally think the Camaro's stock exhaust is louder than the GT's and it has a deeper idle rumble. Even the stock exhaust is music to my ears. I want to upgrade, but if you haven't had a chance go listen to the SS exhaust before you make your choice.

Perhaps the GTs I'm thinking of do have some type of exhaust on them (as I'm sure most do)- but they all seem to sound similar, and like I said, I can recognize them long before I even see it drive by. It's very unique. |
The older GT's I would agree with you. The new ones, not so much.

You'll need to listen to lots of exhaust clips. There's so many exhaust options available. But in my opinion an L99 or LS3 needs long tube headers. There's a special quality (exhaust sound quality) you get from long tubes that you just can't get from a catback or axle back exhaust. And I agree with you about the stock Camaro exhaust. I've never been impressed with the stock exhaust on the L99 or LS3. At least the LS3's exhaust is a little louder/aggressive vs the L99s (which is ridiculously quiet stock). |
Having own both 2010 Camaro 1SS L99 and 2011 Mustang GT 5.0, I can tell you, with little money for moddings (Axle back and K&N air filter), the Mustang 5.0 sounds really mean. For the Camaro, you have to put in a lot of money (headers, HFC, Catback system) to get an aggressive sound.
The 5.0 has a faster rythm and high tone rumbling V8 sound while the L99, with all mods, has a slower rythm and lower tone rumbling V8 sound. I like them both because everything about them are uniquely different in a car. I believe the fast rymths and high tone exhaust sounds from the Mustang allow you to pick up a Mustang car from a far distance away. However, with the right exhaust mods, my wife can tell my Camaro coming home from 1/4 away. |
All I did is put on high flow cats and the car got quite loud. It growls quite nicely now.

got a sound clip or a vid ? lol:drool: |
You will never get the same sound as the mustangs, unless you buy one. The heads are totally different, and that's where they get that "Stang" sound ...

the new 5.0L for sure have a better stock exhaust IMO. looks better and sound better BUT i feel the camaro sounds better with a exhaust over a 5.0L with a exhaust
