EXHAUST SYSTEMS - Which Ones Better N WHY ?
I had put a Borla exhaust system on my 2002 SS after doing some extensive research on what system was considered the best ...and talking to different shop owners who specialize in doing modifications for corvettes and camaros....i wasnt too familiar with exhaust systems back then.....all I knew was that I wanted the best...
I want this thread to help alot of people who are considering getting an aftermarket exhaust system....which will be alot of people. Thanks for your input everyonehttp://www.camaro5.com/forums/images...s/thumbsup.gif I know theres a couple different exhaust systems out there... We just want to know everyones experience with the exhaust systems they got for thier cars......What exhaust system do you RECOMMEND and WHY ? FLOWMASTER ... BORLA ... MAGNAFLOW ... SLP ... DYNOMAX ... CORSA ... EDELBROCK ... BASSANNI ... ??? ... |
whichever one you want is the best. plain and simple.
go to www.ls1sounds.com and listen to some of the cars on there i personally have magnaflow |
i had lt headers, ory pipe and the magnaflow catback on my 02 SS and i loved it.

It really is personal choice. Are you looking for sound, HP gains, MPG gains, or looks the most?
It will also be sorta hard to tell until we have actual Camaros running around with the various systems. That being said, however, I've always been a fan of Borlas, although the Flowmaster American Thunder series has a pretty impressive sound as well. |
I'd have to go long tubes, no cats and custom true duals. Thankfully my buddy has a mandrel bender and does quite a bit of exhaust work. Probably use Dynomax bullet mufflers, they sound awesome and have them on my current and last LS1 Camaros.
|
SLP might have a loudmouth exhaust system as well like Tag has on his SS. I'm sure there's a site that compares several exhaust systems and they'll probably have charts and sound bytes for specs, etc.

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE? |
first off, please stop supersizing your comments.
second... cats are catylitic converters, they convert noxious fumes from the exhaust into emissions passing fumes. true duals are just that, they are a setup where each side of the exhaust runs its own tubing all the way till it exits, whereas a catback setup takes both sides from the motor to a y-pipe then to the muffler and splits it back up to the exhaust tips. |

So with that being said, i'll be putting on a new cat-back Magnaflow for the new SS! :happyanim: |
It all depends on your car's set-up. Different catbacks sound differently with particular headers/cam, etc. It's especially hard to say since none of the big brands out there (borla, magnaflow, slp, bassani, corsa, etc.) have produced anything for the camaro yet. For all we could know, the stock catback could sound better than all of them :( I'm OBVIOUSLY, playing devil's advocate, and it's highly improbable that that will be the case. But anyhow...

Corsas sound the best.
I have been looking on youtube at corvettes with exhausts and I like the Corsas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZwhH5U9WWs |
SLP Loudmouth FTW!!!
The looks (dual/dual slash tips or single 3.5 in slash tip on either side) The sound (very deep rumble and LOUD) The gains (yes...with an added y-pipe, you can feel the gain) Price (does not cost you what Magnaflow or Borla will run) IMO, there's nothing better...just my .02 And Mindz, I had the Loudmouth on my 02 Z28. It's just the SLP dual dual on my current SS now. Sux...and I'd spend the money in a jif for the old set up I had, but I'm saving it for the next SS. |
Flowmaster super 44 have a nice deep growl.
Corsas do sound good, but are pretty expensive. bleh, exhaust is all personal and is a VERY tough decision. so just listen to as many different systems as you can and pick your favorite. |
Where would I get prices for the exhaust? Where would I buy them and where would I get them installed in ny? Alotta of the performance shops had closed down here, so its hard to find a place

20 bucks more for the Magnaflow.... 400 more for the borla.... not a good price comparison tag.... you biased #@$#*))$@*$))!@&#!@&$)%# lol jk... SLP is a nice setup. Flowmaster for some reason sounds like ASS on 4th gens. but since we are being biased... quick little clips of my exhaust (stock manifolds & y-pipe, gutted cat, Magnaflow cat-back & automatic/manual cutout) View My Video if you watch closely the camera shakes from the earth trembling at my exhaust. lol another round away from the house so im not bothering the neighbors View My Video hooker super comp longtubes, 3" ORY, magnaflow catback. ive got a cutout, but didnt feel like unbolting it for the vids. http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...h_PICT0500.jpg from a distance... im still runnin rich... as you'll see in the next vid View My Video flame throwin. i like to cook the rice...lol |
Your posts are very colorful.
Exhausts really depend on what sound you want. The performance is generally pretty consistent, so pick the one you like the most. Big names, I should point out, are usually a little better than small names in terms of performance, but it won't make that much of a difference. |
Chambered anyone? Tag... some help?
|
I think Bassanni or flowmaster for me. Borla is most of the time too quite. I want a loud sounds and I know I get it with Bassanni or flowmaster and they are both Chambered!
|
This is like asking who makes the best speakers, you will get 1 million opinions all different. Everyone hears differently and wants different things from their exhaust. I can say that you likely wont notice any performance difference between any of these systems (as long as they are the same size) although they would like to claim otherwise. It comes down to sound which the site mentioned above is great for, and that is BY FAR your best bet. That said more expensive exhausts I have noticed, eliminate the idle drone that makes your brain hurt when you are sitting at a traffic light. For example I had a Corsa on my C5 that was great, nice quiet rumble at idle, and then ripped open at full tilt. In contrast IMO Flowmasters sound like crap, they are a cheap exhaust that is way too loud and droney, and not a tuned sound just a loud for the sake of being loud sound.
Like I said, listen to as many as you can then make your decision. |
GMMG and Stainless Works offer chambered exhaust if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if Stainless Works does anymore, but I've seen some truck systems that were.
Personally, I've had a Borla adjustable catback (CB) on my '95 and '02. I love the exhaust because it fit great and was adjustable. In my '02, I also have an electric cutout where the difuser plates go and I can adjust it with just the flick of a switch right now. I can go from being heard a mile away to a very controlled, near-non-existant raspy/resonant tone. I think I'll be looking into systems from GMPP, Magnaflow, and SLP this time around. No offense to any Corsa guys, but I've never really been partial to the sound on the cars and trucks I've heard (but those were mostly Camaros with LTs and that sound just didn't appeal to me; it was tinny without being raspy - hey, to each his own ;)). I think the GMPP CB will be made my Borla or Corsa so know the fit will be great and they'll be stainless and perform. I know the SLP, when it comes out, will be no different and I think the Magnaflow will be just as good and maybe the least expensive. Who knows though? With all the CB out there getting past a thousand bucks it'll be a tough choice and come down to which sounds good and makes the best power. If GMPP comes through with an off-road system, I'm likely to go with that and get GM's warranty, and if not, I'll be looking toward the companies that do make a bullet-style system, because mufflers suck (or blow, or whatever). I'll probably put some electric cutouts just past the cats' too, just for when I need to be heard :) |

all of the catback talk is greek to me.....this will be my first performance car so I need a little help. I care about looks and a deep rumble sound mostly. I have ordered an automatic ...... so to get the sound i'm wanting...will I pretty much have to add an exhaust system?
If so, once i've picked out the one I want....do I just take it to a performance shop to have it installed (since obviously I can't do it myself)....anyone know any good places to go in Dallas, TX for this? I know, i'm totally clueless....but trying to learn! :bonk: |

Glasspacks....gotta love 'em....simple, little back pressure, but damn loud. Had some Thrush on my '69 383 Roadrunner. Personally I liked the deep sound of running them with no tailpipes. Suppose designs today have progressed way beyong fiberglass, so this decision's gonna take some listening at LS1 Sounds. Good luck with the restore! I'm more than a bit envious....and, hey, a classic muscle car needs a classic exhaust - go with the Cherry Bombs!!!!! :headbang: :blackvertshift: 2SS/RS Black/Black w-Cyber Gray stripes/Auto - ordered 10/18/08 - Polished Aluminums added 12/1/08 |

Hey its his car, he wants cherry bombs, i'll put cherry bombs on it. Sounded like a top fuel car 4 years ago (last time it actually ran). Just finished dropping the motor back in a month ago, done for the winter.... |
I have borlas but have fell in love with magnaflows, and thats the first mod I'm doing when I get my chally
|
i havn't delt with exhaust modding a whole lot, but on my 540i i deleted both resonators and added a magnaflow - all i can say is that the germans went through a lot of trouble making it quite, and that magnaflow really helps the V-8 tone out
i can only imagine what they could do for an american muscle car ! |
I am leaning towards magna flow, or borla as a second pic. I think corsa sound too ricey to me and I worked at a harley shop and had nothing but problems with fit and finish with bassani. I am looking for a low muscular sound, not neccisarily loud. With all this said, I am interested in hearing the final finished exhaust sounds for the 6 and 8 stock. They did put a ton of research into the exhaust sound, so maybe it might be really nice sounding.

One word of caution for those of us that have ordered the automatic transmission, wait a while before making a decision on which exhaust to put in if you are looking to do this mod. The A/T model cuts to 4 cylinders in certain situations, I had a Chrysler 300C that did the same thing. This becomes a challenge to exhaust manufacturers as when it goes into the 4 cylinder mode a slight "drone" is created, a sort of a low level hum. Stock systems take this into consideration and keeps the drone to a minimum. If you put certain systems in the low level drone becomes an unbearably loud hum when it kicks into 4 cylinder. There were several exhaust systems that were created for the 300 that addressed that issue so hopefully they will replicate it for the camaro. Some 300C owners just put in long tubes and were satisfied with the results.

Camarospike, whats up with the wiggly exhaust that makes it sound so much better? Does it ever pop open on the road?
EDIT: Ok now I get it, automatic/manual cutout. Very clever. |

Regarding the AFM on the autos' making drone - I wonder if the GMPP catback will take care of that. It's stated it meets all noise requirements and such. I say go for the off-road catback instead :D |

yeah, I've seen true dual setups with dual mufflers that sound decent, but the catback systems as a whole from flowmaster suck ass |
do you think it would be too crazy to tune out afm to add a loud exhaust? i plan on doing that if it doesnt completely kill gas mileage(which i dont think it will)
