Question about Clay Bars

Ok, I've read numerous threads and I keep getting confused. I don't know what exactly it does, when or how to do it. Obviously I have never used one before. I get my Car out of storage in 2 weeks and want to give it a really good detailing. Wash, wax, etc...

Question I have is how to do it? Do I wash first, Clay Bar, then Wax?

I really didn't know anything about clay bars until I saw threads on it. I thought I'd ask before I go out and buy some detailing products tomorrow. Was thinking of this one http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/CarWashingCleaning/CarPaintCare/PRD~0392869P/Mothers%AE+Clay+Bar+System.jsp?locale=en

Thanks

Basically, it cleans your paint removing contaminants that washing alone doesn't remove. It also removes wax and sealants.

It leaves a clean surface ready for polishing, sealants, and/or waxes improving the the time they last on your vehicle.

The Mothers kit is a good choice!!!

And yes, wash, clay, polish (if needed), then sealant and/or wax.

What he said... Just make sure as you use the clay to use some sort of lubricant as you clay. I usually use a soap water mix, some use detail spray but if you use detail spray I feel your wasting money on the spray. Soap water mix in a spray bottle works just fine. Spray the area then clay the area. If the clay sticks need more lubricant.

Ok, so use a lubricant such as an auto wash soap mixed with water? And after the clay do I rinse off the car? Might sound like an obvious question, but I just want to do it the right way

Wash the car after using the clay bar, then you can wax.

I just did mine today. The funny thing is, I used detail spray. I couldn't find my spray bottle for soap/water mix. So I used detail spray not my adams spray though. I actually left the detail spray on. I did a panel at a time; spray, clay, then Adam's Swirl, then Adam's fine machine polish, removed then buttery wax. If it is a soap/water mix I wash then clay with the soap water mix then rinse the car off and dry. Then do the detail procedures.

A spray bottle of water with a few drops of soap is good.

I don't dry my vehicles if I plan to clay and clay while they are still wet while also using a lubricant. I use ONR for the lubricant.

I wipe the panels down as I go. I don't rinse after claying.

With all that on your list to complete, you might to allow for more than just "tomorrow"

If you can find some shade it will help. Keeps car surface cool & keeps lube from drying out as quick. Remember to fold clay over. It picks up a ton of contaminants off surface. Good luck & post pics when done.....
