Sinister Black SS Build Thread (Picture Heavy)
I purchased my black 2011 1SS/RS after I realized Indiana has some of the most random motorcycle riding seasons. After joining the Army in 08, my 09 Harley barely made it out of the garage. In 2011, I took a short ride to the Chevy dealer and walked away from one toy and straight to another. I have been having fun building this Sinister SS ever since.

I picked up a Belkin AirPlay Bluetooth receiver last fall. Since I have a 1SS, I don't have a PDMI module. Instead of going out and buying one and then having the dealer reflash the stereo this works just as well IMHO. It connects to any A2DP capable device and plays anything you want. The only thing that really bugs me about it, is when you start the car it doesn't auto sync to your bluetooth device. You have to re-pair your device and then hit play on your music player. (Might just be my phone though.) It pairs quickly though and only takes an extra couple seconds to play music. It also has a build in speaker and picks up calls like a champ. I picked it up onsale for $40. A few guys in the club now use this too. Really decent upgrade if your not interested in the real upgrade.

Picked up some carbon fiber vinyl. It is really easy to work with and looks almost like the real stuff.
Here is an actual piece of carbon fiber on top of this vinyl. http://s5.postimg.org/tit7mllg7/Real_vs_fake.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/41at303pz/CF_Bowties.jpg |
After some help identifying the leak in the below thread, it looks like I got hit with the dreaded oil cooler leak... So off to the shop for this and some "other" things. More to follow :)

It's been a crazy month. Here is an update!!
I came home last week to find my next project at my door!! Engine bay clean-up... Heater hose relocation, fuel line relocation, coil pack relocation, and new valve covers. I can't wait for everything to come back from paint!! I also got an awesome set of door props. These things are amazing quality!! I can't wait to use them at the next show. I jumped on the Adam's koolaid train too... After the clinic they put on in Louisville for The Derby City Camaro Club, it was hard not to. What an amazing product!! http://s5.postimg.org/e60vj2pxz/9f5e...0aa803cb_7.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/s9wqrgx5j/82e0...0a9e28ec_7.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/tdgv3fhsn/7cb0...0aaa04c4_7.jpg |
Engine bay cleanup update!! So I finally phased out this project and jumped in. I'm currently sitting at phase 6. Hopefully I'll have everything buttoned back up and cleaned up in a week or two and actually get some proper photos taken.
Phase 1 - Take over garage and build a spray booth Phase 2 - Install heater hose relocation kit Phase 3 - Flip fuel rail, set aside to polish, and remove plenum cover Phase 4 - Paint plenum and fuse box covers Phase 5 - Remove coils and paint Phase 6 - Install valve covers with coil relocation kit installed Phase 7 - Finish wiring harness dress-up, install plenum cover Phase 8 - Finish fuel rail flip and install a few additional hose hiders and dress-ups ie evap lines __________________________________________ Phase 1 http://s5.postimg.org/vlj58kt07/Garage.jpg Phase 2 - Heater hose installed. I used JDP's install DIY and it was spot on!! I fully recommend this mod and their DIY. I spent more time draining the fluid than I did actually installing the new hose. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...ferrerid=47550 http://s5.postimg.org/wz66q52vr/Engine_Bay1.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/6khcxo9nb/Heat...tion_Final.jpg Phase 3 - Pulled the fuel rails off and set them aside. JDP's DIY was spot on for this mod as well. Very easy. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...ferrerid=47550 http://s5.postimg.org/u197wfv87/Engine_Bay2.jpg Phase 4 - I used sandable primer and smoothed out the fuse box and plenum cover. I still need to clear everything but they came out better than I could have hoped. http://s5.postimg.org/ggifxbffb/Plenum2.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/qk75tgw5z/Plenum3.jpg Phase 5 - Coils came off nice and easy. I hung them and sprayed. I took the opportunity to start dressing up the wiring harness with friction tape and split loom sheathing. Once everything is installed I will finish wrapping. That way there isn't any unsightly gaps in the loom from twisting it around to connect everything back in. http://s5.postimg.org/j0e2rf2zb/Engine_Bay3.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/o7z5vvjkn/Coils1.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/4c36gc2jb/Coils2.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/nrijn6l7b/Wire_Sheathing1.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/8svjf0grb/Wire_Sheathing2.jpg Phase 6 - I hit a road block last night on this one. I noticed the valve covers and my coil relocation kit aren't made to be used with each other. I didn't want to relocate the coils to the back of the block or to the rails so I had to drill and tap the valve covers to install the coil bracket. More to come... |
Looks freaking awesome so far man! Keep it up.

!!!UPDATE!!!
Got my valve covers back from the metal shop. (I don't have my own drill and tap set so had to go out of house) They are perfect and ready for paint. They are going black and red lettering. http://s5.postimg.org/yy9gvp9zr/20130823_182711.jpg Almost finished fuse box. http://s5.postimg.org/xyj5zzutz/20130827_221358.jpg I really liked the look of the SSX front bowtie. (http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=243828) I decided to make my own. I still have to get the center bowtie delete and modify it. Work has been killing me though, so hopefully I'll be able to finish this all up in a few weeks. http://s5.postimg.org/5x54mapjr/20130827_220655.jpg |

I also went ahead and finished most of Phase 8. I relocated the evap solenoid to the side of the fuse box. It really cleaned up the passenger side of the engine bay a lot with just doing that one relocation. __________________________________________ Phase 6 http://s5.postimg.org/4dvl3smvr/IMG_20130917_191819.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/az3pptdcn/20130917_210229.jpg Phase 8 http://s5.postimg.org/3zu9472s7/IMG_20130906_231935.jpg Phase 5 (additional pictures, also painted dip stick) http://s5.postimg.org/da6d7qdhz/IMG_20130917_192157.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/5p3cc9ihj/IMG_20130905_181918.jpg |
Great job, kinda of a shame you had to cover those nice looking valve covers with the coils.

Can you take a pic showing how the coils are attached to the valve covers?

Finally finished all of phase's 6, 7, and 8 tonight!! Tomorrow I'll top off all the fluids and clean her all up and get some better pictures. Can't wait to get her back on the road. Here are some quick pics of before and after!!
Reveal Thread: My Spin on Another Engine Bay Upgrade... (finished) http://s5.postimg.org/ua5yuoz4n/20130803_173558.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/l13skkq8n/20130803_173542.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/jbupciajb/20130921_220542.jpg ::edit for more photos:: http://s5.postimg.org/58h7n2wuv/IMG_20130922_183558.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/5mijmogyf/IMG_20130922_183405.jpg |
Winter is comming up and I would hate to be stranded in the cold with the only source of warmth coming from a burning down Camaro... I'd rather be cold!!
I took a little time to put together a fire extinguisher mount via this DIY. Fire extinguisher with custom bracket for around $30! It came out awesome and I was able to use hardware I had sitting around from after the engine bay upgrade. Win win!! http://s5.postimg.org/qnaiu4h93/IMG_20131003_232247.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/el88xd5xz/20131008_191343.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/rqnr3gztj/IMG_20131008_193809.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/n61kojg47/IMG_20131008_194006.jpg |
I haven't had much time to get out and about, but a few weeks ago I did manage to get out for an amazing cruise through Kentucky's horse country. Derby City Camaro Club also celebrated the end of show season with a nice photo op. It looks like it's mod season again...

Happy New Year!!
Best wishes... |
I picked up a new tower brace and heritage grill. I should have the brace painted and installed soon. I decided to find a 1LE style front splitter to replace my current splitter. I honestly can't stand my sinister splitter. I have a few more ideas for this coming up show season, so we'll see if I can get them all in!! Wish me luck.
Fenders, Grill, Splitter, Rims, ABL install, RGB halos... should be fun when all the parts start coming in!! |

I've had my eye on a NightOwl kit for awhile, but a few weeks ago when they debuted the defused DRL rings I pulled the trigger and picked a whole kit. I didn't take many photos of the install since the kit comes with an awesome install DVD. The product speaks for itself.
Joe from NightOwl is possibly the best customer service person I have ever dealt with too. Within a few minutes of sending an email with a question he was calling my phone to get everything straight. Great guy. Anyone on the ledge of picking one of these up, go for it. You won't regret it. While the front was off the car I managed to install the new grill and landing pad. I think it and the SS emblem needs to go one grate, so I'll probably change those pretty soon. Next up is a new splitter to finish off the front end refresh. Well... It's been a crazy 2 years since I updated this last and I haven't been able to do much to the Sinister SS. However, in those 2 years, I left the Army, moved around a few states, and purchased a new home. I still own her, but the car mods have been sidelined for house mods. One of the first things was the garage floor.
The guys at Gorilla Garage were fantastic. I did a lot of research before I went with them. I'm 100% happy with the end result. I wanted something that installed fast and was really durable. They installed everything in less then 4 hours and within 24 hours I could drive on it. These floors come with a lifetime warranty too!! http://s5.postimg.org/n9heq76vr/IMG_20160326_113712.jpg http://s5.postimg.org/wsr3jnudz/20160327_182054.jpg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw6DhuYkfIQ So, now that things have started to slow down on the house I can focus back in on one camaro project that I have been wanting to tackle for a long long time. I've wanted to replace my terrible looking sinister front splitter with the unicorn 1LE splitter. It took me 2 years of off and on searching, but I finally found one all the way out in Portland. The awesome guy even had a brand new install kit for the thing!! So now the camaro is up on my home made ramps and I'm about to see what type of damage the current splitter has done. (On a side note, why buy race ramps when you can make a set for less than $10?) While I'm working on the front end I'm going to add some water proof led quick disconnects to my diffuser ring RGBs. As is, I can't take the nose off without cutting the wires to the DRLs and the wires have been sitting on my workbench for a year or two. Updates to follow!! http://s5.postimg.org/9we9nl21j/Phot...2331282879.jpg https://s5.postimg.org/6qy9b48t3/20160827_171239.jpg https://s5.postimg.org/3y51r38gn/20160827_171318.jpg |
hey badass looking car man. Im thinking about getting the rear trunk spoiler for mine. Does that spoiler mount up using the factory holes already drilled for the factory wing?
|
Quote:
The sinister spoiler is not very attractive spoiler if you look at these pictures here, http://www.pfyc.com/SC1215.html I would suggest this, it has studs built in that use the factory holes and hardware http://mpd1.com/content/cam_rearwing_big.html |
