Picking a camshaft: TSP, JRE, Comp and Lethal

I am planning my build and looking for some comments from people that are using or have used the cam they are commenting on. See my current bolt-ons in my signature. My plan is to purchase a cam kit so I will be upgrading the rods and springs when I swap the cam. Based upon another thread I am leaving the stock trunions in there.

My build is going to eventually get a supercharger so I want the cam I get now to work well with that down the road. This is a daily driver that will probably never see the track (not one anywhere near me). I want to maintain, if not improve low end power with the cam. I know the S.C. will give me that when I get there, but this car rarely goes above 5000 RPMs so power at the top of the range is wasted on me. I don’t want to battle the clutch when going under 25 mph. I am getting a HP tuner, and I know a lot of that will be on my tune, but I mention it to address the size of the cam question, I want something in the stage 2, or mild stage 3 range as long as I can still drive 25 mph. I am also not as concerned with adding sound, this is a performance upgrade, but in the right power band for me (2500).

Enough qualifying statements. I have been reading a lot of great threads on this forum and I have an idea of what I am looking for, but want to hear what has worked and what was learned from a daily driving perspective. I like the brands mentioned in the title of the post. So looking for comments on DD cam that will work with a SC. What I will need that is not in the typical kit, and anything else you wish you knew before you started.

That is a very broad question. What kind of supercharger?

There is no one cam that does everything. I have a TSP Stage 1 LS3, 225/236 and it is a great DD cam. Makes within about 15 rwhp of larger cams but drives excellent and is a N/A cam. This cam would work better with a Pro-Charger style supercharger. It would work ok with a LSA style too but would not be optimal.

If i were to do it again i would stay under .600 lift for spring life, i'm not looking forward to changing springs every 25k miles. I would call BTR and have them custom grind you a cam but they will want to know what kind of FI you will be running as well as other things. I would recommend trunion upgrade to CHE or btr v2 but that's your decision to make.
That being said my jre rough idle blower cam runs very well i can still cruise at 1600rpm with no bucking. The only time i notice there's a cam is the choppy idle and slow speed parking lot driving, have to use the clutch more. I also have to give her a little more rpm to take off from a stop smoothly. I haven't been to the dyno for the finished running yet though.

There are plenty of options out there for you. My first question is on the supercharger. If you plan on going with a centrifugal then a N/A style cam would probably be best. It'll work great N/A and solid with your blower. If you plan on going with a roots blower a PD blower cam would suit you best. Give us a call and we'll get you set up right.

Go with TSP, and a remote tuning from them also.

I gotta say Lethal wins the marketing competition. The name Night Fury makes me want to get it in that alone. Looking at the specs though and some of the comments from those that have it is a bit aggressive for a DD. Not sure how well it matches up with a S.C., anyone have that set up?

Have PatG https://www.patgtuning.com/ spec a custom cam and then have Cam Motion grind it for you.

Good Luck!

PEACE

What’s aggressive to one guy as a DD could seem stock to another. You’ll only know what/where your limit is after you drive a car with a different camshaft in it so don’t focus much on that

Lots of reviews on this site about this cam and I’d say most are positive. Type it into google and check some out

I want to push the line between as much HP as I can without making it a pain to drive at 25 mph or in a parking lot. The SC down the road will really ramp things up, but in the meantime I am trying to build an engine that is fast and will accept the SC.
I went to PatG website, am I right that it will cost $40 for advice? I like the idea of getting a custom made cam, but I don't want to pay $40 to find out that a comp cam or TSP makes one with similar specs without the custom price.

Tsp, gpi, cam motion, ljms, btr in no particular order

Again, most will want to know what SC. You cant "custom" anything until you have all the facts.
On that note.....if you want drive-ability.... why not keep stock cam?

90% sure it will be a Whipple. I am looking at a cam for the added hp.

2011SSCT 04-10-2020 06:45 PM

I just had JRE's blower cam installed in my car knowing I'd be doing the Whipple in a couple months. Yes, spending all that cash at once would have had me in divorce court....lol. I'm an auto so I obviously had the L99 to LS3 conversion too. I thought I'd be trading some drivability for HP, but my car runs and drives better than it did before. I know we're comparing apples to oranges because I'm an auto, but the JRE cam produced amazing numbers for an auto.

Most of the companies listed carry comp cams ground for their shop with minimal difference between each of them.

Just reach out for Comp Cams and have a truely custom grind cam for you. They also have plenty off the shelf cams they ship to shops with cool names
