The slots are there to help wipe away dust. Slots and holes used to be used to relive the gases released under high heat from the pads. Current pads release far less gas, some almost none.

One thermal barrier that gets over looked is pad thickness. Once you are through half the pad, the pad is done as a thermal barrier.
