It would be silly to take a Camaro to the track and attempt to run 87 octane with a stock fuel table. Of course you were slower, the car sensed detonation and pulled timing etc. I think you missed...

Its not a clear cut answer. If you never reach the threshold of the 87 octanes limits, then yes, 93 octane is a waste (as far as needing the extra octane points). There might be cleaning advantages...

higher octane is only required IF a vehicle has detonation (knock). Running higher octane is useless if there is no knock. Lower octane doesn't automatically mean bad things. I don't drive my car...

I have a 12 SS and I drove the first 500 miles on 87 octane, on purpose. I drove it hard enough that I am sure it would have seen knock. Higher gear with high loads on the engine. I then ran 2 tanks...
