There is no need to remove the alt to install the new plug and fitting. If I remember right, I removed the bottom 2 bolts and swiveled it out of the way when I installed mine.

How hard was it to get to the fpcm? I know you have to remove the back seat and the side panel, but other than that is it pretty a straight forward install?

It wasn't too bad where I tapped mine. I had to take the sway bar loose an the hot wire to starter. It put the fitting just above baffle. Haven't had any problems since.
